Sabra and Jack vs The Dire Wraiths, get ready to deal me in.

Left click to enlarge
For a while now I've had this Sabra & Jack of Hearts team up fan art rolling around in my head. So while my girlfriend was preoccupied with the Superbowl which I didn't give a shit about I started sketching this out. I'd say with inking and coloring the whole thing took around 8 hours from start to finish. I tell ya folks nothing gives you a better sense of appreciation for the pros then when you start something that you conceived from your own imagination and actually finish it.
I especially wanted to do something that featured Jack in the costume he had when he "died" in Avengers #76 (Vol.3). Truth be told I was never a big fan of the original design. Too busy and it looked a bit too much like an actual playing card. It's a shame these two Mantlo co-created characters never got a chance to teamed up, or for us to get to see them battle the Dire Wraiths. Originally I was going to have Sabra blasting off the top part of a Wraith's head with her energy quills but then I remembered one of my favorite wraith kill shots . . .

  1. Noice! Heeheehee- Wraiths are so gross...
    Starshine kill-shot- BOOM! Wicked.
You started too early, though!!! -Now what will you do for the end of the month?
I like Jacko'hearts O.G. costume best- It's fantastically gay... right down to the little cartoon heart over his eye. I was just reading that Cosmic Powers mini last night and he showed up in it...
Oh, and since you asked: Comet-Man was FUCKED UP. I judged a book by it's cover- figured with a name like "Comet-Man" and the cheesy looking costume and cover- it would be something like Meteor Man, Solarman, or The Illuminator... Like a kid-friendly thing.
-I should have known better where Kelley Jones is involved. I'll be tracking down the other issues for sure- it was fantastic. Reminded me of a cross between DC's Starman (Will Payton) and Marvel's The Sentry. Maybe throw in a little of DC's The Weird. ...man, I really like some obscure characters.

  2. Awesome! I really dig your fan art Shlomo. Your love of the characters really comes across in your artwork dude. Nice work! I know I've said this before, and I'm not bitching, but I would LOVE to see some backgrounds in your stuff bro'! A cityscape, a forest, or even a star-field could be cool. Just a suggestion, but either way the characters look great. I still cant even draw a female dire wraith so I'm very impressed that you can not only depict them accurately but that you can show them in action. Very cool man, very cool.

    1. if you got to my deviant art gallery you can see all the stuff i've done pretty much all on one page as opposed to looking for it all here on this blog where it's scattered among countless postings. you'll see some of my stuff does have back grounds and then there's some that doesn't.
i may yet play around with this one i do feel like it's missing a little something else in it. but as always getting the characters drawn correctly is my primary goal in any sort of fan art i do. poor figure drawing is almost always the biggest problem with most fan art out there.

  3. Nice work man. Im digging this jack of hearts here.i too liked his look in this "death".nice hair!

He was only a body when he was brought back by scarlet witch only to kill antman2. Then going back in time to that point it turned out he was the real jack.the witch saves antman 2 this time and he blows for the third time saying "im sorry".In the whole zomibe thing after all this his zero energy reforms him

I hunted almost all of these deaths and reborns down.only missing that back in time one.

  4. Nice mr! The colouring on Jack of Hearts especially is awesome - I think this piece shows off your use of colours more than anything I've seen! When isn't right between the eyes cool :)

  5. Joseph, thanks bro it sounds like your something of a curator of the deaths and rebirths of Jack.

Dan, thanks mate i didn't see that compliment coming given all the color work i've done before but i'll take it just the same.

Chris, ok here you go i threw in some dire wraith magic razzle dazzle in the back ground for you.

  7. Art piece looks pretty good. I like it. I agree with the others tho...throw some b/g in there. It'll give the picture some depth that'll really make it pop.

  10. Sweet artwork right there buddy. Now see I much prefer jack's original outfit to the later modified one he got in Silver Surfer#78 and the one you drew. Too D&D for me. But sweet art nonetheless.

  11. These are 2 of my favorite characters, Me and Sabra were going to get married at one point but you know how love goes. On the real though this is nice work man and a great kill shot.

What are you going to do for our little drawing post crossover project? //// Don't tell, lets wait until I got something to talk about :)

  12. Dale, thanks for the heads up on that Silver Surfer issue i'm kinda curious about that now.

Omega Agent 1, let me guess, she insisted on a Jewish wedding? as for the art project you got me brother i had an idea about this one piece for a while now but basically it started off as sketch to kill time last weekend.

  13. Nice work Shlomo! I'm also a fan of the original costume but your rendering of the new costume and your choice of team-up against the wraiths looks fantastic. Bravo mon ami

  15. Mark, right on thanks for swinging by to check this out.

RT, that's one of the many cool things about fan art you can show case stuff that never happened, but should have.

  16. Speaking of Sabra, I saw her in the middle of a bunch of other heroes for a Summer Olympics special that was advertised in Marvel treasury edition 25, but never published. Have you seen it?
