ROM issue # 1 signed by our pal Sal and some mind blowing sketch art!

Gary Martin Jr. gave me a heads up on this at the CGC Collector's Society website. It came with the following caption, "Sal Buscema signature and head sketch on cover - very difficult to get and only one in the census".

Proper proportions, perspective the interplay between light and shadow, foreshortening and other principles in good figure composition is a tireless craft you have to be honing all the time if you want to be able to do it well. And let's not even get into the art of drawing hands, feet and facial expressions. Practice practice practice it's what all artists have to do for years in the slim hope that a few of them will be able to make a living at it some day. A big thanks to Jack Crowder for bringing this sketch (deviant art) to my attention.

And a big thanks to Rick Hansen for sending us this commission sketch from the recent C2E2 con. This is what I always imagined a dire wraith would look like if illustrated by greats like Berni Wrightson, Gene Colan and Mike Ploog.

And for a bit more of a finished piece here's the latest from Dann Phillips talk about the fight that should have but never happened back in the day. As irony would have it just prior to Dann giving me a heads up about this I had been telling him how I had this fan art idea of a Baron Karza vs Hybrid piece I really like the idea of the Micronaut's arch enemy having a throw down with what could arguably be Rom's. Too bad Sal Buscema never penciled at least one Micronauts issue.

Oh and look what else just turned up, an extended ROM vs Firefall CG video fight scene  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVX-DIBAgdo

One last thing folks, it looks like my farcebook account got suspended for good this time. Oh well I kinda saw it coming : ) You can always email me for those of you who have my email address or find me here as usual.

  1. WoW- that got a 9.8 even with the Sharpie-swiped barcode? Ha- I did not even notice the sketch until it said so!

That first sketch is fucking great- it has everything going for it. The Wraith one definitely does look Wrightson/Ploog-esque, I dig it! The third on would be the loudest fight ever- clang, clang, clang, bong, clang! Armor Wars indeed...

Why would your Facebook get suspended? Were you trying to sell GMO-modified puppies again???

    1. just a heads up i added momentarily ago a youtube link toward the bottom of the posting you would probably be interested in. as for facebook i've been public enemy #1 of all the fucken leftist anti-Semites there for a long time and they whine to farcebook 24/7 about my account. truth be told i would hardly ever have any use for farcebook at all if it wasn't for going there to screw with those nazi assholes.

  2. KOT the black line on the book is printed by marvel to mean Direct edition. They did this to prevent retailerd getting credit for the sale.this was changed later with a face of spidy over the bar code.

That issue 1 is awesome! I noticed Sals lttle drawing right away.

The Baron vs Doom by Dann is a Win,Win,Win.

Saw that firefall vid via Facebook and speaking of which will miss ya shlomo. Your posts were the real and didn't hold back the truth. No wonder you got the complaints from the ignorant.get first of the month post here !

    1. thanks Joseph, although i think it's safe to say the crowd over at the Bring Back Rom facebook page aren't going to miss me much. not that i care, as far as Rom fandom goes they so irrelevant they hardly have anything there that we all haven't seen a million times already for years now and in general that page a ghost town. anyways, not to worry my friend as long as i still have this blog you'll get plenty of "real" along with cool new and rare Rom related stuff.

    2. Ohhhh, Okay. -I did not know that they did that. Seems an odd way to go about it. I do have old comics with a Sharpie crossing it out though- done at one point by someone else for a similar reason I'd imagine. -Now I know where they got the idea!

  4. Wow! I'm really envious of whoever is the lucky owner of that Rom 1 issue! The sketch underneath of Rom and Hybrid is a fantastic demonstration of form and perspective. It communicates all that is needed while being true to the characters, despite being a rough sketch. Thanks also for the kind words! I'm incredibly happy with how this piece turned out.

  6. To say that was a life-long goal to have Sal sign that copy must be an understatement right?

    Hell yeah man.

Sorry to hear you got your fb account suspended. Yeah I'm not surprised either, but still, nice to know freedom of speech does not always extend to Facebook.
You'll be back, I know it;)
