ROM and Dr Doom face off in Strange magazine

Ok enough of all this IDW shit for a while it's time to get back to some old school stuff again. This comes to us from Gary Martin Jr. proving once again he is a ROM curator through and through. I'm actually a bit sketchy on the details here but I believe this comes from the activity section or page of the Marvel mostly reprint French magazine STRANGE issue 166. Interestingly enough notice how the rendering of ROM here has him with fingers instead of mittens? This will most likely be my last posting of the month but as I've mentioned to some of you I have another posting idea for early next month that involves some exotic locations on the other side of the world I'll at starting late next week.

One other thing. I wanted to thank EVERYONE who's come to visit this blog recently especially if you left a comment. It's been a LOT of fun for the past couple weeks with all the back and forth here with those who share the same opinions or have a different point of view rather it be about the zero issue or Civil War and whatever. I know some folks over the years have had issues with everything from my sarcasm, cynicism and even the very blog title it's self. But if nothing else I keep it pretty interesting here much of what I post you won't find on other blogs, twitter or farcebook with ROM fan boys. That was my primary mission when I started this blog actually. But even more importantly you will not be ignored here or have your comments go unanswered. I've just always thought that's a dick move.

  1. Strange was one of a handful of comics that gave French kids access to the Marvel Universe, translating many a ROM-era series into anthology form...for example, Strange #166 had 4 U.S. comics stories inside it: whole issues of Iron Man, Amazing Spider-Man, & a Frank Miller Daredevil; and the 2nd half of ROM #35. Strange did also have activities sections galore, in fact ROM was included in a crossword puzzle in #166 too. But the ROM Vs. Dr. Doom game is a very large pull-out insert meant to be separated from the comic (the back side of the insert is probably more notable to collectors, as part of a series of exclusive Marvel posters...a big titled portrait of Namor is on this one). Makes me wish Marvel USA had done more kooky stuff like this with ROM...I was always disappointed he wasn't in Fun & Games except as house ads.

    1. thanks for that information i'm sure some of the followers of this blog will find that interesting. most of the art work that came from Strange as well as similar foreign publications was either reprinted marvel stuff or original art that was mediocre and often very obviously done from direct clip art references. most of the following was from the cover art. but some good and or interesting ROM related original art work has turned up from these foreign publications for which i featured on this blog ofcourse.
a while back during one of my random ROM related internet searches i came across what had to be some kind of poster insert from Strange or possibly some other similar magazine. it featured ROM and The Torpedo flying together over what was presumably Clariton. i didn't think the art work was very good so initially i dismissed it but it was rare and unique so later i had second thoughts about it. never have been able to locate it again unfortunately.

    2. Check this out, see all the Strange posters including the 2 huge new portraits of ROM, 1 with Torpedo:

Sometimes a poster only had text ads on the backside, but occasionally there'd be something more interesting like the ROM Vs. Dr. Doom game, and I've found smaller ROM inclusions on two other different board game posters.

Two other countries produced ROM posters: Greece (a few small ones simply reproducing US cover art) and the U.K. Marvel UK made the one you've posted before at http://romspaceknightart.blogspot.com/search?q=summer+special ; plus there's one other of which I'm aware, and lots of Marvel UK comics with posters that I've not been able to find out whether or not they include ROM.

Does anyone reading this have a collection of Marvel UK's The Mighty Thor (1983, aka Thor & X-Men) to let us know if any of its "Marvel Classic Cover" centerspreads include ROM?

  2. A bit off topic, but I wanted to bring this speculation article to everyones attention about the next transformers movie: http://www.forbes.com/sites/lukethompson/2016/05/17/how-the-newly-revealed-transformers-5-title-could-be-hinting-at-a-major-crossover/#226b9d7e47ee

    From Forbes magazine no less.

    1. Honestly I think that article is more blind speculation then anything. But Rom or no Rom michael bay doing yet another pop culture pandering explosion extravaganza TF movie holds very little interest to me. First one was great but it all went down hill after that.

    2. I agree that it is completely blind speculation, but I can't help but be a little excited with the possibility. Yes, I am also aware Michael Bay pretty much just films explosions. Maybe over time, we can wear you down and get you a little excited for all this new ROM stuff :)

  3. But how do you play this game? Never took French

  4. I'm tempted to just say it's a French game nuff said. Although I didn't include it here there were some English instructions that sounded similar to checkers or chess maybe.

  5. I gave Dave a hi-res version of the game with legible instructions, plus my own (google) translation of them into English, and he hacked it up & only showed you this low-res version. Dick move, Banner. ;-)

  6. that´s a cool drawing! Dr.Dooms lines reminds me of Bob Layton´s drawings in Iron Man.

hey Shlomo, there´s been a little X-men movie expo here in Sao Paulo, i took some pictures:

  7. Does anyone have a better readable version of this? I'd like to take a crack at translating it and adding it to my game database.
