Spaceknights over San Francisco

Left to enlarge
I've owned my ROM collection for most of my life. That includes issue 48. But for some reason I only realized earlier this year that part of the issue takes place in San Francisco. Which is weird because I've been living across The Bay from S.F. since I was 9. Over the last 30 years I've been to S.F. countless times for everything from rock concerts to comic-cons and strip clubs. I also used to work in S.F. and one of the hand full of long term relationships I've ever had was with a gal who lived in S.F. near Ocean Beach.  It was so cool to discover this recently it was kinda like reliving reading this issue for the first time but seeing it a bit differently too.
World famous Golden Gate Bridge
On a related note let me take a moment to talk about New Warriors #60 which I just acquired a few months ago because of a significant ROM tie-in: http://romspaceknightart.blogspot.com/2012/04/new-warriors-60-offering-moment-in-cool.html The issue opens up with this awesome splash page of Turbo flying through downtown S.F. To the left of the clip art you see one of the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge and to the right you see the TransAmerica building which is the tallest skyscraper and most distinctive feature in the S.F. skyline. But keep in mind the distance between the bridge and downtown SF is much wider then suggested in this clip art but I guess they wanted to get it all in on this scene some how.

We'll I'm plum outta postings at the moment so I think this will be a good point to take a much needed break. I'll still be responding to comments that's a lot less time consuming then putting together these postings.

  1. How cool would it have been to walk around S.F. and look up and see a couple Spaceknights glittering in the sky? Easy enough for me to imagine, but more real I'd expect for someone who's actually lived and walked those streets.

    1. well i've never been a street walker in S.F. but that's not to say i haven't seen my fair share of interesting stuff hanging out there. in particular during most any political demonstrations (Youtube), the annual Folsom Street Fair (Google it and cover your eyes), the annual Pride Parade, on Halloween (especially in the Castro district) and on any given weekend.

    1. i think for me it makes the reading experience more personalized. i remember back in early 2008 when my dad gave me a copy of the San Francisco Examiner because they had run an article about the X-Men having moved their base of operations to S.F. it was really cool to see familiar landmarks and areas in the background of the issues. have a look at this 2008 article complete with clip art and all: http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/2100445:BlogPost:18783

    1. my friend, rest assured there were mutants in San Francisco long before the X-Men got there. all you have to do is Google "folsom street fair" and hit the images tab. brace your self.
