Claudio Cavallote presents - ROM, aside from beautiful women one more reason why Brazil rocks!
Just wanted to open up this posting by letting everyone know I've been to Brazil 3 times and each trip was a blast! Now I'm happy to say that one of the followers of this blog is from Brazil. Sao Paulo (St. Paul) specifically which is a huge city that I spent a lot of time in and had some adventures. One time in particular comes to mind when I almost got into a fist fight with some drunk guy from New Zealand who was being a real dick at this party in high rise building in downtown Sao Paulo.
But I digress, what your seeing here is the comic book issue that began Claudio's life changing experience of becoming a ROM fan. And also what you are looking at is some drawings that he did as a kid obviously inspired by reading ROM. Much better stuff then the crap I was drawing back then I might add. Now I know what you all are thinking, what does that cover say?
My Portuguese (no they don't speak Spanish there) is a bit rusty but I can make out pretty much all the words. But the grammar presents a bit of challenge and I'm afraid if I try to write it in English something might get lost in translation. So hopefully we can all expect to see a comment from Claudio soon who can help us out with that cover and share with us any other info. about this stuff like how old was he when he got that comic and did those drawings.
Nice stuff - I can never get enough fan art to look at. And that cover - ROM and Nova? That would be pretty cool
ReplyDeletewell i'm wondering if this book contains among other things a reprinting of ROM#24. that seems to be the case based on what the cover says and from what i know of the story for that issue. as far as i know that's the only time ROM and Nova ever appeared together. i'd love to get a hold of this thing and compare the Portuguese with my english version of #24. that would go a long way to improving my Portuguese. Claudio if your reading these comments we have questions that need answering my friend.
ReplyDeleteon second thoughts i think i'll take a stab at translating this after all. the headline reads:
ReplyDelete"Marvel Premier Almanac starring ROM"
translated word for word it comes out to however:
"Almanac Premier Marvel the star of ROM"
you see how that grammar can throw you off?
the vertical strip is saying something to the effect of "What if someone else were to become NOVA?" again this leads me to suspect this book contains a reprinting of ROM#24. as we all know in that issue Richard (dick) Ryder gives up his NOVA powers and is returned to Earth. and just as a side bit of information there was a Marvel What If issue in which Richard (dick) Ryder refused to give up his Nova powers. for a recap go to: http://siskoid.blogspot.com/2010/07/what-if-nova-had-not-given-up-his.html
In May 1982 I was 10. I was sick and when I got better, I asked my mom for money so I could buy a magazine that had some "robot" for me to draw. I was already crazy about "Star Wars" back then! He loved to draw "robots"! At the newsstand, I saw this "Marvel Premiere 2" which was a collection of various heroes and the premiere of Roma in Brazil. In the magazine there are two stories with the Roma: "The Arrival" and "The Return". On the "New" is the story: "And if someone else becoming the news?" This was the first comic that I read and I have kept until today. The drawings that I did think it was made in 1982 or 1983. I made many drawings but today only a few left ... Thanks David for your friendship and the nice post! In the future I will send you more pictures. A big hug!

Thank you for sharing that wonderful child hood story Claudio which i think most all of us can relate too regardless of what country we live in. every body take note Claudio didn't correct my translation which means i must have been right or at least close enough.
ReplyDeleteThe translator works very well David! Then I'll put on my blog too. Then send more pictures of Brazilian comics ... Please when you return to St. Paul, I hope you will not find with Neozeolandezes ... =)
ReplyDeleteI've always liked seeing how American comic books get re-packaged for sale in other countries. They usually get bundled together, so the reader gets several stories instead of one! Not being up on my historical exchange rates, I'm not sure if the re-packaged comics packed more bang for their "buck" or not :)
ReplyDeleteRegardless, those are some great drawings, and I join the Dude in thanking you for this cool story!
I like the direction the top sketch was going in with that perspective. It's too bad you never finished it.
ReplyDeleteI need more info on Brazil printings of Rom (http://home.hiwaay.net/~lkseitz/comics/Rom/comic/int_brazil.shtml), but from what I understand, only ROM #1-6 were printed in MARVEL PREMIERE ALMANAC #1-6. The Nova story is probably from WHAT IF...? (vol. 1) #15 (1979).
ReplyDeletemmmmmm it seems my assumption of ROM#24 (and my translation) was some what less then accurate. i'm gonna have to go with the "What If" issue likely hood, thanks Lee.
