I was tinkering around with this ROM drawing from his page in the Marvel Universe Handbook (#9 Vol. 1) art work. I ended up giving the drawing a black back ground, glowing eyes and some Micronaut style fonts. Then I came across what I think is the coolest Torpedo custom figure I've seen out there. And believe it or not this one is at least 1 of the 3 that I know of. His visor looks especially awesome! So I thought it might be cool to dress up the image with some cool fonts along with some lighting affects.
The link below will take you to my Youtube video on Annihilators Earthfall #1. I'm not happy with the decreased pg count and the cover price along with the RR back story but for what it's worth it did have some high points such as this nod to the ROM legacy with this line IKON drops on these aliens which happen to be disguised as humans.

And here's something I just learned about Friday afternoon thanks to a comment left on the last posting before this one by a fellow who goes by the name of Brandon. The comment was vague but it prompted me to check out FF#9 on Youtube where I fortunately found a reviewer (majinoni6) who pointed this out. What you see here is one of several Reed Richards from different dimensions involved in some sort of conflict with the Inhumans. There is a sect of Dire Wraiths who are part of some alien cult that worships King Black Bolt. As you can see here "Reed" turns a familiar looking weapon on some Dire Wraiths. We've been seeing the Dire pop up in the FF series a couple of times now and I know we'll be seeing more of them in issues 10 & 11.
So if you've seen my Annihilator Earthfall Youtube video you know I'm not too happy with Marvel right now. But I must say this homage to ROM has made some in roads to Marvel getting back on my good graces. So last year we had Darkstar: Winter Guard and this year we've got the Annihilators and now this. It seems if nothing else the ROM buzz has made it's way to Marvel's high ups in the last year or two so I guess that's cause for some cautious optimism. Operative word here "cautious".
Interesting, a Neutralizer Knock-Off. I am going to assume the glowing yellow-green aura is protecting him from getting zapped. Is this one of Marvel's alternate realities or the main timeline? I also have to wonder where & when Reed decided to make a copy of it and if it is as powerful as the original.
ReplyDeletei think you misunderstand what the writers were doing here my friend. there's no actual ROM connection here as far as the story goes. it just happens that he has a weapon that looks like ROM's neutralizer as he's fighting some Dire Wraiths. this was just done as a homage to the ROM legacy by the writer and or editor of this issue.
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to see. Maybe one day we'll get to see Rom back and named. And I'd Akin and Garvey are inking, even better.
ReplyDeleteah yes the good ol days of Sal Buscema's pencils complimented by Akin & Garvey inks. that was a powerful combination Martin you have an eye for excellence.
ReplyDeleteas for ROM's return i already outlined how Marvel could do it right now with out any legal worries. just have him be human and rewrite his name as Romm or Rahm. both are pronounced as "Rom" and who cares about the spelling any ways since in the Marvel Universe Rom is an alien name. i wish i knew how to pitch this idea to the right people at Marvel. it's pretty obvious Rom still has a devoted fan base out there. he may not be still popular enough to carry his own title any more but i guarantee having him make appearances in other titles will boost some sales.
I think with FF riding high on the sales charts at the mo, if Jonathan Hickman did want to drop ROM in Marvel would find a way. Still the Wraiths have been in his run since before the name change so he must be going somewhere with them!
ReplyDeletePlus Collider have details on Guardians of the Galaxy being one of the next Marvel films in line. Wouldn't it be sweet if things were cleared up in time for a knight to take part!
It certainly would be Dan. And I love the fact that, no matter how many complaints we may have with Marvel as a company, some of the writers and authors there obviously work their own little ways into keeping bits and pieces of the ROM mythos alive. And in very interesting ways. Reed probably could have built 20 different things to deal with the Wraiths, but they gave him that. I think that's just brilliant.
ReplyDeleteyeah seeing that pretty much was what prompted me to try and contact Abnett & Lanning directly. the sentimentality for ROM is obviously not just at the cult fan boy level but also among certain parties at Marvel it's self. it's long past time we just figure out what sort of "tweaking" we need to do to the character to have him back once and for all and be done with it!
ReplyDeleteOk I agree that this is pretty cool,..however as a ROM fan I want and expect more from Marvel regarding the ROM legacy. I love that Dire Wraiths are still around and are still kicking ass though! Great find!
