This awesome sketch card was sent to me by Rick Hansen earlier today from Artist's Alley at the g-fan fest. Here's the latest found Rom fan art out there for you all to check out and critique if you care to: http://jasonflowersart.blogspot.com/2012/01/rom-sketch-card.html

Thanks for posting this on face book Rick I'm sure fans of Mantlo's work outside of the Rom universe will appreciate seeing it here. This is the coolest rendering of the Human Fly I've ever seen he's usually not drawn to look this bad ass as he is here.
Honestly, that last one impresses me as he drew it simply on his lunch break. The shadowing is off on the head, but it's a decent rendering.
ReplyDeleteRick really scored there. :) I wish Chitown wasn't so far away, it would make it easier to visit these kinds of things. Still, I'm glad he sent it to you. And that you shared it with us.
I wish I had seen someone doing custom figures at last year's comicon. Someone who put the time and energy into figures like this, that we can't buy off the shelf, could probably scoop up some cash.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the kind write up! ..and for once again posting my customs! I've loved these characters since I was a kid and have always wanted to have them in my collection. I really want to make some more! Thank you to everyone who has viewed or commented on my custom spaceknights!
Chris-
no problem Chris i'm always happy to feature good Rom and Bill Mantlo related stuff here. i imagine you're looking to finish up the Spaceknight Squadron first but i bet there are a lot of people who would like to see a Firefall custom. that would be a tough one i imagine but if you could pull off a good one that would be something else.
DeleteThat is one SWEET looking HUMAN FLY.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who has the full run of that old gem, I'd be very interested in seeing more (and a movie?!) based on the real-life guy (with some super-heroic fantasy add-ons as needs must).
Nice catch!
whoa! look who's back from beyond. i didn't know you were such a fan of The Fly how cool. ya know i sent you like almost two months ago a this Wizard magazine calender page that feature both ROM, Man-Thing and the good doctor i thought you'd be stoked about it but i did hear anything from you about it.
DeleteSorry, m'man.
DeleteLife's been chaotic.
I did receive it and loved it (I have so many of those things from the magazine, but don't know if I had THAT one or not. One day I'll have to dig them all out).
Anyway, I've been lurking on your site behind-the-scenes and haven't missed a posting.
good to know you're still around and as far as all the shit you're dealing with it could be worse at least you're not working in pre-press anymore. i certainly don't miss it.
DeleteFirefall would be awesome! Rakk ,Unam the unseen and Trapper great custom figures ! All from one of my favorite later rom issues.
ReplyDeleteJust left the local shop and picked up annuals 2,3,and 4 .look forward to seeing them and passing it over to my spaceknight crazed son. Missing much in the collection but scooped those annuals, plus marvel 2 in one ,Hulk and power man rom apperances and heart attack all for under 10 bucks in vf to fine cond.Great rom sunday.
i do believe you will enjoy those Rom annuals the stories in them are great although the art in #4 left a lot to be desired.
DeleteYea the 2nd was great loved it. also the marvel 2 and one I liked the story very much .The poweman / fist and the hulk issues not as much.saving the other annuals for tonight and the next night.I had the 1st once since i was a kid
Delete. Its awesome my son is into Rom as it gives me a reason to get all 30 or so that i was missing. So far my favorite issue still is good old 25.
Awesome you tube vids by the way. Loved seeing those.
I'm really looking forward to seeing The Human Fly back in action!
ReplyDeleteDamn- that Human Fly looks PIMP! I wish them luck with whatever they are trying to do there... the site was kind of shite, so I'm not quite sure. A documentary, obviously... but a new small-press comic too? Is anyone from here going to San Diego this year??? I'll be getting drunk at home and reading articles on it instead.
ReplyDeleteI adore the beady little innocent eyes on that ROM sketch-card...
And it's just too bad those Spaceknight figures aren't/weren't real! Oh, the missed opportunities... You're stupid, Marvel.
