How To Draw The Shlomo Way

So you're probably doing a double take at this seeing as I just posting it a couple of days ago. Well yes and no. In the previous version I had posted a scan that didn't have a back ground for or the Hulk's body (except his pants) colored yet so those items I did in photoshop for time's sake. But yesterday I finally got around to finishing the whole thing by hand and it came out so very differently then before.
Do you want to know how I did this particular illustration from start to finish? Well of course you do so I'll tell you but unfortunately I can't do it with a beat like that cool Marvel rap video from last week so you'll just have to read on.

1) First, put a hole in the box and then you put your . . whoops wrong explaination :) Pretty much like any other illustration this started as a pencil sketch.
2) Once I got it to more or less look the way I wanted it to I went a head and inked it. And if you're saying to your self about now "what do you mean you inked it?" then you've seen Chasing Amy one too many times (not really that movie rocks!).
3) All the color areas on ROM and Sabra were done with fine point coloring pens. So was the Hulk's pants.
4) Next came the Hulk's skin which I did using a combination of pastels (coloring chalk), coloring pens and coloring pencils.
5) And the last step was putting in the background which was just pieces of clothe with pastel powder on them smeared across the paper.

Well even today Rom just seems to turn up in the damndest of places rather it be a rap song on Youtube or in geek magazine. A big thanks to Rick "smash" Hansen for the heads up on this which I just had to update this posting with for obvious reasons. The first half of the ROM entry is basically just a run down of the toy and comic book history nothing you all don't know already. Interesting that despite being well aware of the character rights legal issue Geek magazine never the less published the cover of ROM #1 which as far as I know they shouldn't have been able to do legally speaking. I guess like IDW Publishing earlier this year with that Rom vs Mars Attacks splash page they just didn't give a shit. It seems every other publisher out there has a bigger set of stones than Marvel which won't even give us a cameo of Rom even now that he's human.

  1. I'm gonna have to try that pastel powder on cloth thing, because it looks awesome.

  2. I'm loving the ROM, Optimus, Acroyer piece! Thats awesome. Amazing coloring job on ROM by the way, I still haven't figured out how to emulate silver properly without painting it. Nice work Shlomo!

  6. That's what the background is? Always thought it looked like watercolours... Nice.
Prime looks pimp all colored out.

    1. yeah as displayed as an electronic file it does have that water color look to it but of course if you saw the real deal next to one of my water color paintings you'd see the distinction right away.

    1. Don't knock it till you've tried it, KoT. They have cool stuff...like giant pictures of Nathan Fillion. And apparently ROM. I was just looking for the October issue the other day, and I didn't even know it had this in it. Now I'm going to have to track it down.

    2. i hope you can order single copies online otherwise i have no idea how one would get this issue. certain types of big chain book stores might have had this in their magazine section but most of those places are now closed along with just about every video rental store chains. but it does look like a pretty good magazine based on what i saw from it online.

    3. Walgreens has had it occasionally. That's where I've picked it up, but I haven't seen the October issue yet. :(

    4. Hey, Random- I just Google-Image-Searched about 200 different, giant pictures of Nathan Fillion for my... uhhh... enjoyment. lol
I'm just saying- with all the nerd media sites and blogs and geek news online- us dorks get it instantly. There is no point in waiting for a magazine to print that's full of old news by the time it comes out. It's why Wizard and ToyFare died out... Of all subjects and hobbies that exist- geeks are the most likely to be getting instant updates online about their particular niche... Who are they marketing a nerd-magazine to in 2013? -Filthy casuals with no standards??? (I kid, I make joke, we're all friends here!)
      ;)
I just don't get it. But que sera, sera.
Shlomo, it's sad to see all the book-stores go, man... Books are not an outdated medium- those Kindle things suck ASS. And reading an entire book or comic on a screen is just fucking painful and ludicrous. You spend all day working on a screen, you go home watch TV on a screen, go out to a movie on a screen, you gotta talk to people on a fuckin' screen, video-games: screen. Computer browsing, shopping- on a screen. Now you gotta read books on a screen too? There are televisions in gas-pumps, at the grocery-store checkout, in bars, in waiting rooms... We're all gonna die of eye-cancer. AND THOSE KIDS ARE BACK ON MY LAWN! Where's my chasin' stick?

    5. i worked in publishing for about 10 years and it's just the nature of things these days for print media in this internet age. especially when it comes to newspapers. even popular magazines that are still around like MAXIM have dramatically changed their format to keep their head above water. that mag. is only about half the page count that it was 9 or 10 years ago. but i tell ya what i draw the line when it comes to reading a book on a screen fuck that kindle bullshit. as for Wizard and Toy Fare they went under in 2011 http://comicsalliance.com/wizard-and-toyfare-magazines-cancelled-r-i-p/

    6. I love real books, but I have to say, my Dad got me a kindle and the reason to have it around (aside from the instant gratification delivery system) is the fact that it holds so many books. If you finish one in the doctor's office, you don't have to read that copy of Redbook from 2009. You can read the next book on your list. And it all fits on one handy device in your bag. Without wearing down the battery on phone. So yeah, at home I read normal books, but for travel the Kindle is pretty sweet.

  9. Shlomo, bang up job dude. who is the little flying micronaught? He was a great addition to the piece.

The ROM blog keeps kicking ass.

    1. thanks man, yeah things seem to keep moving right along here. as for the little guy he's one of The Micronauts (Acroyear) which was a another 80s toy line based comic book series that Bill Mantlo wrote which was pretty successful. like Optimus Prime and ROM, Acroyear has that whole stoic code of honor warrior king mojo going on that's why i wanted to put the 3 of them together. for a quick reference do a Google image search with key words the Micronauts Acroyear.

    2. P.S. more Sabra on the way and i'm making her even more bad ass as ever.

    3. Acroyer sounds like my kinda warrior. It would be cool to see more of this guy.

  10. I really love the Rom, Optimus and Acroyear pic. Great work. Dang I miss Acroyear and ROM. So much potential wasted on copyright issues. I actually stopped buying Marvel Comics all together because of what they did to Galador.

    1. i had already quit buying new Marvel issues even before that. it had been about two years since i bought a new comic when Infinity came out with one exception which was the Infinity prelude in Avengers 17 about a month before. but like i took a chance given the first time return of our iconic spaceknights and poof. so that's it i'm back to not buying new marvel books any more they don't deserve my money.

    2. On your newest post I just mentioned mediocre Marvel. How about Secret Avengers is about to have another #1 issue? It's just a couple of months into a brand new run.

    3. it might as well be Mediocre Comics now : )

  11. Geek magazine's use of the Rom cover is covered by fair use. It a minor use of a trademark/copyrighted work being used to illustrate a story about it.
