ROBOCOP 2014, dead or alive you're seeing this awesome movie

The first thing I realized shortly after the movie started was that the whole promotional campaign for it was really piss poor. As most of you know I was quite the skeptic. If you are a big fan of the original as I am and you're worried about taking all that nostalgia baggage into this movie don't be. This movie did an amazing job of retelling the Robocop narrative in a completely contemporary setting that deals with hot topic issues today such as media spin, drones, out sourcing, terrorism and even politics both in terms of foreign policy and domestic. But of course it pays homage to the original while showing us how it can be retold in a way that doesn't make it better, just more up to date with the world we are living in today. Beyond that I don't want to say any more about the story for obvious reasons.
I will say this, the movie had much less gore then the original which may or may not be to your liking. The cast as a whole did a fantastic job, I'd say Gary Oldman especially. This movie was also a good example of how when used properly computer generated effects can enhance a film visually instead of making it tedious as did the Star Wars prequels. Again, I can't help stressing enough how this movie is not better or not as good as the original. In a way it's almost an invalid comparison because even though it deals with many of the same issues of course it also deals with many more that weren't in the public conscience back then. Yes, there are some things that the original had going for it that can never truly be topped like Peter Weller as Alex Murphy, Kurtwood Smith as Clarence Bodicker or Ronnie Cox as "Dick" Jones (just to mention a few) and we can't expect . . nor should we that exact chemistry from this movie. But you can expect to go see it and have a great time while still appreciating the original every bit today as you did back then. So for old time's sake I'm going to wrap this up with some of the Robocop stuff I've posted here before.

  1. Sorry- not giving them a single penny of my money for this shit. Yes, I can safely say it's shit without seeing it. Robocop is awesome- this will not be better than- or even as good as, so why fucking bother? -Even though the Evil Dead, and Nightmare On Elm Street remakes were not horribly made films... they still were not great- and I'd rather just watch the originals again. I refuse to support these unnecessary remakes. -That's why they keep making them: People keep paying to fucking see them for some reason! Then they bitch and moan about how inferior they were- THEY ALREADY TOOK YOUR MONEY!!! -They don't give a flying fuck anymore about what you think now...
I'll watch it free online when it's ripped in HD. Maybe. If I get THAT bored one night. I'm pretty-much uninterested...
-I am dreading the day Gremlins finally gets remade. Or The Goonies...

    1. well i certainly didn't have high expectations for it but at the same time I didn't go into it wanting to hate it either. but if that's your attitude about it then yeah it's not likely even seeing it with a complimentary hooker and joint from the theater will make you feel it was worth the price of admission.
I don't have a problem with remakes/reboots if they're done well. to me a good movie is a good movie period and if I'm gonna pay for something I wanna see a good movie rather it be reboot or sequel. I feel a Hell of a lot better about having given my money to see this then I did when I saw Thor 2, Iron Man 3, Riddick or Star Trek into darkness bullshit. but getting back to the matter at hand I guess I feel the same about what the CW when it comes to their interpretation of super heroes as you do about movie remakes/reboots.

    2. It's not about expectations... it's just cold, hard reality. I don't WANT to hate ANY movie- what kind of person just wants to hate things? But I can tell you- Hollywood executives do make it very easy.
No amount of pot or alcohol is going to make this a good movie- so what's the point when I own the first two on DVD... not to mention the Frank Miller script-adapted comic. If I'm going to PAY for a movie- I'll take an original idea, please. No reboots, no sequels... When are those EVER as good as, or better than?
Sure- you can name ONE or TWO examples- out of how fucking many??? Not worth it. And if people would just stop paying for them- THEY'D FINALLY GET THE HINT!
I also thought Thor 2, and Iron-Man 3 were fucking terrible. I hated them both. Like- a lot. I only even kind of liked the first ones though... I thought Iron-Man 2 was a hot mess as well... Captain America 2 looks better than all of those combined- but we'll see.
Riddick was AWESOME! Loved it!!! How could you lump that in? Yeah, I hated part two- and the anime... but I always loved the fuck out of Pitch Black! Riddick was like Predators for me- they totally got what made the first ones so good- and made an ambiguous sequel instead of an unnecessary reboot...
Star "lens-flare" Trek was also awful, I agree. -Never bothered with the reboot sequel. Why would I even bother watching the sequel to something I hated, you know? Plus- I'll just watch The Wrath of Khan again, instead!
TV is free. Stop wasting your money on crap movies.

  2. That "chopping mall" on that wall NEVER gets old. What s killer movie and cheesy tag line "where shopping will cost you a arm and a leg"

a movie that showed you how lightning besides killing you can screw your whole chances of getting laid even in a matress store. Classic.

I am reserved on robocop remake. The gore and brutality of the orginal are dear to my heart so im setting my hopes on low for when i see this modern version of robocop to avoid the being let down

    1. It's the 2nd word in the panel, plus you've shown us before- don't worry: we got it. Right now- what's important is that everyone see Chopping Mall instead of wasting money on a RebootCop ticket!

  5. Nice write up mr - my friends and I are checking it out tonight as it's cheap Tuesday at the local theatre. I'm still on the fence, and a little worried about the low violence thing but hey here's hoping right. ;)
