Marvel Comics turns 25 for Rom spaceknight # 84

A big thanks to Gary Martin Jr. "a Rom curator" for getting inspired from my recent stuff to do some new fan art for this blog. This another one of those What If? sorta things. Gary used some software called GIMP to do this. I'm not familiar with that program and when I hear the word gimp I'm more inclined to think of leather, chains and rednecks as opposed to graphic design. But I digress, here is Gary in his own words:
"As long as we're righting obvious wrongs, consider this What If scenario: ROM wasn't cancelled, and either remained in armor or circumstances required he don it again. Issue #84 would have been cover dated November 1986 and our favorite Galadorian would have participated in Marvel's 25th Anniversary cover month. It always irked me that ROM missed out on that awesome border dressing, so I've rectified it by bringing back prime Sal-on-Sal Buscema, flashy-burst eyes & all, for the cover art (clipped from one of my favorite published pages, ROM #10's opening splash). But while we're at it, let's assume he drew the pages inside, too!"

  1. Very cool one! Thanks again Gary Martin Jr for putting that together it looks dead on to how they did do it back in the day! I remember these covers. Some of my drawings on my art page on deviant.com are from these covers I just left out those boarders!

See David you're a great influence! I actually got to see the Batmobile here is Fort Lauderdale! The guy that owns it lives nearby and brought it to a Superman convention I had gone to with a buddy!

Imagine my awe and horror being one of the few times I wear a Superman shirt and Here's "The Batmobile!!!" My friends actually call me Batman because of all my Batman T-Shirts

    1. i've had a small Hotwheels size version this batmobile stuck to my car dashboard for the last couple of years now. the old Batman show was awful and this car never made any sense from a crime fighting stand point. i mean why would you drive around in a car that had an open canopy all the time? not much protection from bullets or even from the rain. but from a looks stand point it's one of the coolest looking cars ever designed and you can't beat those rims!

  2. I remember that border! And Mr. Martin did a fantastic job. ROM definitely belongs there. Dave, GIMP is a free photo and picture editing program you can find online. For those of us who don't buy Photoshop. It's not as easy or complete as Photoshop, but again...free.
Dave, that was the best Predator costume I had ever seen. I wanted to walk over and grab tendrils, but honestly, I was a little scared of him. I really wish Cobra Commander had been walking around more and had wandered over by Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, because that would have been hysterical. Comicon was a total blast, though. Next year I hope I get there the full three days.

  3. One of the things I really have wanted to do but have not had the money to do was to take one of the Corel courses on how to REALLY use CorelDraw and Corel PhotoPaint. The Corel suite is a LOT cheaper than anything Adobe and you get BOTH for around $4-500.00. Draw is a vector based desktop publishing type software while PhotoPaint is raster based. That is what I've used to manipulate scans of my artwork. I've done a couple of 'digital paintings' but don't really know enough to do them efficiently. I had Painter once and it looked like it would be phenomenal but I am just more comfortable with traditional techniques; pens and brushes and inks and paint. Of course the downside is you can't "Ctl+Z" those.

    1. i can draw and paint all this sci-fi comic book stuff just fine. but with out the digital versatility with any graphics that photoshop gives i wouldn't be able to do half the stuff you guys see here. i would have to give up blogging altogether with out the use of photoshop no joke.

    2. I would love to get photoshop, but I have absolutely no reason to get it, other than a wish to play around with it. And I already use up my excuses on other things. Like comics. And comic related items.
I'm very happy you have photoshop Dave, and therefore, the blog, because otherwise what would I read?

  4. As always...thanks for your thanks, everyone! When I got the idea to give ROM this deserved cover treatment, I wasn't sure that I would be able to do it; in fact I almost emailed Dave with just a description of it so he could use his fine skills to realize it. But then I 1) remembered I had picked up GIMP quite a long time ago for another project unrelated to comics, 2) became determined to do it myself & not let Dave have all the fun, and 3) found an evening to concentrate on the task. It took something like 6 hours because I had to figure out, for my first time, transparencies on layers and selecting around shapes to cut stuff out. And as the artist I of course see a few niggles that I could do better if I started over, but I'm tickled enough with the end result that it will remain as is. I think it's especially cool how ROM looks like he's crouching down to look out the "window" of the border, right at us the observers.

  5. Those con photos are awesome! I think I would go as green arrow if I ever did cosplay too. wow.

As for photoshop i work with it at home and at work, and now the latest version has hit I have even more bells and whistles to play with. :-)

When you start distorting photos of no goodniks you know it actually has therapedic advantages too lol.
