Rom original sketch card art now on ebay

Well it seems the Rom logo redesign posting really brought the art critic in a lot of people so let's try this one on for size. I found this last night on ebay and it got me thinking. I like the direction this artist (Kio Pham) was going in but I feel like this art has an unfinished look to it. If someone was doing quick sketch art of people's favorite superhero at a carnival or amusement park I would say ok in those terms this looks great. But I'm assuming this guy wasn't under that type of time constraint so if he's got the skill to do what we see here why not spare an extra 15-20 minutes to take it all the way? That's what I would have done especially if I was looking to make a little cash off it. Be sure to right click and choose view image to get a closer look at it: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330940267080

Most of you have probably seen this one before. We know how many times Sabra has tussled with The Hulk before so I'm assuming this artist (Rich Buckler) wanted to visualize how it might look to see Sabra going up against The Hulk's traditional Marvel power house rival Ben Grimm. Again we see something here that I basically like but would have also liked to have seen the artist take some more time with it. Just try to imagine this if it were inked by Akin & Garvey. It would be epic! All that aside I think it would have been fun just to throw a box of matzos into this to make it look like their fighting over it : )

Speaking of Akin & Garvey check out this ROM #43 variant cover. If I were to guess I bet this was the original concept that was fine tuned for the final version. If you need a quick reference for the cover art of #43 here you go: http://siskoid.blogspot.com/2009/02/spaceknight-saturdays-spaceman-saturday.html

Special thanks to Dale Bagwell for bring this to my attention today from the DC/Marvel cross over team up blog Super Team Family. This makes the 3rd time that blog has featured a posting with ROM so thumbs up for them. You can see the actual posting and full size art work here http://braveandboldlost.blogspot.com/2013/06/red-tornado-and-rom.html

  1. That Kio Pham one looks like it could be the the design for the never-conceived ROM cartoon. (Hey it WAS a toy- you GOTTA have a cartoon to sell the toy! Maybe that's why it flopped.)
Awww... now I depressed myself thinking about how cool a Spaceknight cartoon would/could have been!

  2. The Kio Pham picture looks like someone started one of those fake covers artists do at conventions, and didn't finish. Or maybe the person who commissioned it never came to pick it up. Either way, I agree. It needs a little more TLC.

  3. Honestly, I almost like the number forty three color better just in black and white. It feels more traumatic.

  4. The Marvel Project one is unfinished I have to agree. Some shading would go a long ways. The black and white cover though is brilliant. I agree with Randomnerd that it is more traumatic.
Perhaps with the Marvel Project picture you could save it on your computer and mess with it some in the paint program.

  5. thanks for all the comments so far folks sorry about the late reply. i've always liked the original cover to #43 with ROM rising out of his spaceknight armor like a ghost. it's not very subtle, but it's good symbolism for a sense of liberation considering that ROM usually thinks of his humanity as being imprisoned in his armor.

the uncolored version that actually has ROM in human form standing over his spaceknight armor with his feet firmly planted in the ground feels more like he's exclaiming a sense of victory. kinda like a man over machine kinda theme. plus the black n' white inks gives it this epic Conan The Barbarian illustrated feel to it. in short, i think they both have their unique qualities.

    1. This is why I like these art conversations. People bring up things you never even saw the first time around.

  7. The sketch cover even though in its early stages it seems is still brilliant.

Red Tornado and ROM would make a great team-up after-all ready is pretty cosmic too - there's a reason why they've picked him to go into space on every Crisis :)
