Back to Galador with spaceknights that don't suck! (Avengers Infinity#16)

Well hopefully I'm not getting a ahead of my self here but it looks like Marvel may have actually gotten something right for a change when it comes to the ROM spaceknight legacy. There's not much to go on so far and I as of yet I have not read Avengers #16 http://marvel.com/comics/issue/43546/avengers_2012_16 this clip art and information comes compliments of Ptor from the Sanctum Sanctorum blog. But if nothing else, gone is the Manga inspired spaceknight armor along with the panzy ass excuses for spaceknights from the Annihilators mini-series that were more useless then red shirted Enterprise security personal from the original Star Trek series.
I never really bitched much about IKON and although she can never truly replace ROM I've always felt like she as a character had enough going for her in order to give old school ROM fans something to actually enjoy provided she be surrounded with the right kind of spaceknights and a Galador that makes sense. And judging from this panel I'd say Marvel finally figured out how to bridge the gap between new readers and those of us who were reading ROM in the 80s by giving us these well done updated spaceknights that are still quite faithful to the originals.

Anybody remember this Ikon fan art I did almost two years ago? And speaking of fan art that deserves a second look . . .

A while back I provided a link to this fan art found at deviant art by a Brazilian artist who goes by the handle dichiara. I liked it then but after taking a second look at it I think this piece is good enough to deserve a feature blog posting. I think Rom's neautrilizer could have been done a bit better but it's otherwise a solid illustration that captures the feel of the character and is done well from a figure composition stand point.

You guys remember the superhero pillow from a couple of posting ago right? Thanks for the heads up on this photo Rick it's always nice to see Bill Mantlo in good spirits.

And for some good laughs, socially significant commentary along with a trip down memory lane we have some new Youtube videos by The King of Thessaly. First up we see Dr. Strange vs Morbius The Living Vampire and Rob Liefield and women's bodies (part 1) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX04KOrPD8k
Part 2 features Quasar and Wonderman back issue tie-ins from Operation Galactic Storm, Eddie Brock's (Venom) mullet and a tutorial on how to make a white trash version of an Arnold Palmer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3o2ACEr9NmQ

  1. Return of the Spaceknights? In the Avengers? Even if it is only a single panel, I'll go look for it just to have. I totally agree with you on both Ikon and the WussKnights shown in the Annihilators. While Ikon is just a pale replicant of Rom, there was so many questions left open in the Annihilators about the continuity.

    1. What happened to Balin & Tristan? They were shown as having taken part in the Annihilation series (briefly) but it is said that Brandy was only mourning her 'late husband'. So what happened to their kids?
    2. What became of Rom's Neutralizer / Axadar? If Ikon is truly 'the greatest living spaceknight', then why doesn't she wield a Neutralizer instead of some spaceknight tweaked version of the Angel Elite's Judgment Staves?
    3. In the Annihilators, it is made to appear that the whole Galadorian race has all become Spaceknights. Not to mention the armor is now just another suit. Advanced yes, but it makes the whole nobility of selfless sacrifice of the Gen1 virtually disappear in these Gen4 SpaceBLIGHTS.
    4. I've always wondered about the remainder of the Gen1 crew. They left Rom & Brandy because they no longer had any humanity to return to. There must still be a few of them soaring the spaceways trying to do good. I would love to see a powerful old Gen1 join up with a group like Guardians of the Galaxy.
    5. Whatever happened to the concept of specialized individual weaponry? It seemed like all the Spaceknights in the Annihilators were homogenized mass produced clones. Again, this just cheapened the whole concept to me.

Maybe what we need is a contest or something to come up with our own individual Spaceknights. Any Generation, with some backstory and specialized weapons/powers. Nothing Over-the-top that would negate Rom as GOTS or not fit within that Gen's basic profile. I'd love to see a creative effort along those lines. Perhaps a "BFRFWAD SpaceKnight Squadron"!

    1. i think it's safe to assume that the disjointed continuity in the ROM mythology over the last 13 years has pretty much everything to do with the different writers on various titles (Spaceknights mini, Annihilation Conquest, Annihilators, Avengers Academy) who just didn't do the ROM legacy justice in one way or another. i mean i've been blogging about that for years now as the before mentioned shit hit the stands. and as i said before in multiple previous postings it's best to just disregard it all as if it never happened. trying to analyze it all is just a waste of time and brain power i prefer to look forward and see if Marvel got it right finally. thus far it looks promising.

    2. I too wondered why ikon didnt have axadar . I liked how it would only work for the chosen brother. Other then that mini spaceknights I have not read those annihilators but saw ikon in Thanos .

  2. I remember your Ikon fanart. :) I still have it on my desktop somewhere. This is very good news, and hopefully it will herald in a new age of spaceknightdom.
I think the reason they never mentioned Rom and Brandy's kids is that if they did, and brought them further into the comic world, it would just bring up copyright issues over and over again. At least that was probably the thinking.

  3. Mantlo smiling ='s me smiling. -That's an actual fact.

Now WHAT THE FUCK did they do to Starshine's head??? She looks like when Aunt May got The Power Cosmic to eat Twinkies or whatever... I have not been keeping up- is Bendis still on Avengers? -because if he is; this will most assuredly SUCK. I THINK that I remember hearing how they FINALLY shuffled him off that book, though... I was never feelin' Rule 63 ROM anyhow- so, I can't really seem to care about this too much. -Sorry to say.

Ha! -Thanks for yet another free plug! Glad you enjoy laughing at me... I am having SO many problems with my video editor, though... AND my computers... Making shit difficult and not fun. Not fun at all.

    *slitch* indeed!

    1. -Rule 63 of the internet reads that: "For any given male character, there is a female version of that character..."

    2. ah, i see. well i still need to go out and find this issue even though Galador doesn't turn up until the last couple of pages. however even with the Rule 63 ROM i think this shows some promise although we won't know for sure until we see how this story line plays out and how it handles Galador's spaceknights. it's been 1 1/2 years since i bought anything new from Marvel but i think this is something worth taking a chance on.

  5. Hi. I was told I needed ROM rehab and I said I’ll try try try. Out of the rubber room just long enough to type this bit...

I’ve read these issues, Avengers v5 #15 & 16. It’s tough to know just what all is happening, with many subplots & locations; but I can tell you that in #15 a female Captain Universe bearer and Manifold (a guy who I’m completely unfamiliar with who also seems to not know what’s going on) teleport onto an unnamed planet for 2 pages. They see distant smoke trails in the sky and she says they are “Knights...guardians of this place. They will be the first to stand—and the first to fall.” A large spaceship approaches over them as well, and she says “I see all...and all is lost.” More of the same in #16; again two pages in the middle of the slowly lurching storyline, the looming ship, but this time it ends with the wordless half-page panel of Ikon & her Spaceknight squad flying upward. Captain Universe says “my lost little children...how did you stray so far?” while looking at the spaceship, so...I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s name is HMS Endeavor or the like. After I read #15 two weeks ago, I suspected it was Galador so from her prophecy I dreaded seeing #16; I actually thought the ship might quickly destroy the planet. Now that I’ve read part two, I think thanks to the decompressed storytelling we might get a few more pages of Spaceknight action before the Enigma Force’s foretelling becomes an issue. There is hope that Ikon & squad survive past this prelude and into the Infinity event itself, but the writer(s) have done a good job of making it seem like they could be the beloved icons (heh) that get wiped out at the start of an epic so that the new “big bad” is seen as a major power. Have your ROM logo-punching graphic at the ready, my friend.

    1. too bad we have to wait a whole frigin month to see what happens with Galador and those spaceknights. i hope we get more then just a couple pages worth of that for the $3.99 cover price.

    4. Yup, Sounds about like new Marvel... What a waste of time. Don't even acknowledge the past if you're just gonna use it as sparse and pointless fodder.

    5. in the case of the ROM legacy that Marvel has attempted in the last 13 years not acknowledging the past is a good thing i'd like to pretend like it never happened either.

  7. i just read Avengers 16. like most new stuff it was an annoyingly quick read (for $3.99!) but it wasn't bad it had a Future Foundations (FF) kinda feel to it but that hardly comes as a surprise it was co-written by Jonathan Hickman. but i happen to know that Hickman is a fan of Bill's work on ROM and he even found a clever way to pay homage to ROM in issue #9. it's possible Hickman may have been the right guy to handle the ROM legacy all along. well, we'll certainly have a better idea when issue 17 comes out.

  8. Sweet just getting in thought I'd check in and see what's up and Bam!! You're throwing down the goods this all looks wicked good David!!

  9. Wow. I had no idea what was going on until now,..I'm really just glad to see the spaceknights back in any form,..even if they are about to be completely annihilated. Thanks for letting me know what was up! I'm gonna go buy the issues in question,...now.

    1. well hopefully they won't be annihilated as implied by the current incarnation of Captain Universe. but on the other hand wouldn't that just figure. after nearly 13 years of bungling the ROM legacy Marvel ends up making the spaceknights and possibly even Galador into a sacrificial lamb for one of their story lines just as they seem to finally have been presented in a way that does them justice.

    2. ...you're right,..I don't like the idea of the spaceknights and Galador being sacrificed for another one of Marvel's little events. The return of the spaceknights should BE the damn event. I could get angry and rant about this, but I'm just going to wait and see what happens,..then I'll get angry and rant about it.

    3. i don't blame you for your skepticism. but so far Marvel has had 3 different versions of the spaceknights in the post ROM licensing rights era and they were all ridiculously pathetic. finally someone along the way came up with the idea to just simply make updated versions of the original spaceknights. ya know it's like why re-invent the wheel when just some minor upgrades will give the masses what they need? so i'm hopeful for now but come early next month we'll see if it lasts.
