More Rom #1 remix pages & the Terminator spaceknight custom figure!

If you have a copy of Rom spaceknight #1 (you rock) you should bust it out right now unless you happen to have a photographic memory. If you don't have a copy (WTF!?) then you should copy and paste this link into a new window now before you read on  http://diversionsofthegroovykind.blogspot.com/2008/12/famous-first-fridays-rom-spaceknight.html
You'll notice right away that this link will take you to a posting that has all 18 pages of Rom spaceknight #1 nicely laid out for you. Thanks to myself and Gary Martin Jr. we've collected about half the pages of the Rom re-mix project so that you can now see how the original Sal Buscema art compares to the efforts made by the various artists involved in the project. Thus far the best pages in terms of technical execution (page layout, perspective, figure composition and proportions) are 4, 9 and 15.

By Chris Motito
Along with some humorous photoshop embellishments compliments of yours truly I am proud to present the latest custom figure from Chris (exhuman999). Hands down next to Firefall Terminator has always been one of the most bad ass fucken spaceknights. You all by now are well aware that a newer version of Terminator was among the spaceknights that were incinerated with Galador in Infinity#1 so along with featuring this custom the Jonathan Dickman hate fest show must go on.

ONE LAST THING. Treat this as purely hypothetical for now but the notion of a new custom ROM statue (limited edition I believe?) not unlike the M. Helder one is being floated around out there at the moment. Evidently, rather it ever happens or not is dependent on the interest expressed by fans. So the question is would you be willing to throw down some cash for a presumably bad ass custom limited edition Rom statue? If nothing else just leave a ye or nay in the comments section about that, nobody will ever know if you're down for it if you don't take a whopping whole 5 to 10 seconds to write at least that down.

  1. Wanna give all my credit to "Rom, Spaceknight" on Twitter for pointing me to most of (maybe all? can't recall) the pages as the artists announce them there. Besides, @RomSpaceknight is just plain entertaining too. On a related note, there was a tweet that implied someone was working on a Hostess ad remake for the #RomRemix project...could be wrong, I don't really understand hashtags.

While I'm blathering about incomprehensibles, I have a few random thoughts to share about Infinity #1. When it first came out, I only read the Spaceknights chapter. Painfully heinous, so I barely glanced at the rest & went about my business...curating good old ROM stuff. As I saw the other day this latest Captain Universe sleeping in the back of an Avengers spaceship (don't remember which tie-in issue--I missed her getting found unconscious in Infinity #1 so it surprised me), I thought...what is up with this seemingly useless character? Wasn't the Unipower always something that granted a person the ability, when they needed it, to blast the bad guys or fix what had to be fixed? She wasn't even the Watcher on his worst day. I guess I'm hoping still for a) more of the Micronauts connections that I thought were hinted at to come to light [Builders...Makers...hmm], b) at least one of my ideas for Galador to get fully revived coming true [wouldn't be that hard..."Hickman, come with me if you want to live."], and/or c) a certain lady love of ROM's to have been in the yellow armor and survived along with "Captain Universe".

Maybe the most nagging question on my mind: just WHAT were they CURATING? :-)

    1. yeah when you think about it by having Captain Universe there it was kinda of a double dis to Mantlo and Buscema by dickman, what a douche. i'm going back to bed i'll check in over here later today and by the way Gary you didn't give an answer for the last part of the posting.

  2. Well then, I rock! AND roll... all day long! -Sweet Suzie. Because I have ROM, Spaceknight #1.
But I am not a fan of The Re-Mix Project. I'm sure it's a fun project to be involved with- I see the point to it, but it does not look good... on the whole.

Terminator looks fucking sweet! I especially like the paint used on him. It's got that oil-slick green/purple sheen to it. Looks PIMP, son!

Ha! "Dickman". It's so obvious- how did we not see it before!?

As for a limited edition ROM statue by Bowen? Well... -Statue or bust? If it ended up being a bust- hell no.
Or- hell nay. But even if it was a full figure statue- it would be very limited in production and therefor VERY expensive, I'm sure. Even then- you'd prolly have to KickStarter or preorder... and honesty- I'd just rather not. I got better things to spend my limited funds on.
I would be much more interested in a new ROM action figure!!!

I'm gonna go play with my Science Space Monster and watch Space Battleship Yamato. PEACE OFF!

    1. truth be told aside from the 3 pages i called out in the posting i think the project so far consists of pretty much run of the mill amateurish looking art so far. but hey it's ultimately about the cause and if it raises some money for Bill's health care it's a worth while project and effort.

    2. Oh, I didn't know it was for Bill. Well now I feel like an asshole...

    3. @KoT, never! You just speak your mind with no filter. But it comes from a love of the subject. And we all know that.

  3. Hello!
I actually like the idea of a Bowen ROM statue. However I do think that KoT is absolutely right about the production quantity and price. It would be great to see some professional quality ROM merchandise but if I can't ever afford it,..whats the point. So all in all I guess my vote is yes. As far as the ROM #1 revamp,..I say go for it. If the book can help Bill Mantlo rest a little easier, I'm there with cash in hand.
Thank you for featuring my Terminator spaceknight custom bro'!
I love what you did with it man! Thats hilarious! It looks like Hickman's worst nightmare!

  4. I hope that the ROMRemix project helps Bill out and I'll certainly pick up a copy. Thanks for the info Shlomo. Chris, I love the Terminator action figure... beautiful work!
Count me in for a new ROM statue (or bust but I would prefer a statue). I wish Helder had pushed ahead with other spaceknights (I think that Terminator or Firefall were next on his list over at statueforum 4-5 years ago... I think that other spaceknights were put on hold after Randy Bowen hired him).

    2. No thank you :) ... Javelin was one of my favorite supporting cast members - I would love to see your take on him some day. Anyone who can go toe to toe with Terrax has my respect :) http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc10/markonweb/ROM/javelin.jpg

  5. Ok first off...I own 2 copies of Rom #1 so I rock twice as much. ;). Second...Terminator was the best spaceknight this side of Rom (heck he actually became Rom so he is extra awesome)! And third....wow...that custom figure is amazing. Very nice work Chris. You really capture how dangerous looking Terminator should look. I am glad this blog does not forget the creator behind the creation and tries to help Bill.

  6. Chris, Terminator is absolutely amazing. I have no idea how you manage to get that kind of detail and glow on your figures, but keep it up. It's beautiful.
Shlomo, thanks so much to you and Gary for putting together the pages for us. I love being able to see them all. And yes, I did grab my number one to compare. Sure, not all the artists are on equal footing, but they all share a love of Bill, and ROM, so I'll cheer them all on.
I'd love to buy a limited edition ROM statue. If it looks great, I'd be willing to spend more, obviously, if I can afford it. I'm not rich. I'd rather just have an action figure. I realize that's probably not going to happen though. :) I feel a little silly saying YES! Please produce this wonderful thing that there is no way I can buy! But I'd love to see the enthusiasm for ROM out there again. So anything to put the greatest Spaceknight's face in the public eye is a great thing. Especially if it's pretty. Can I call him pretty?

Dude thank you so much for the kind words. I'm so glad you dig the customs! Man doing a limited run of Spaceknights IS the dream brother! I'm trying to get it together to make it happen, and I can promise that they will be affordable custom figures. I want all the blog bro's to be able to have at least one. I did attempt a ROM once but I was just beginning to customize and I really wasn't satisfied with the end result. You can still check it out on deviantart in the gallery,...
      http://custom777.deviantart.com/
I can't wait to do another one though. Thanks for the Starshine kudos as well man!
I hope Bill likes it too!

    3. Nice chris I do hope you do another i would be in to buy one your happy with im sure.i did check your old one out didnt see it when i viewed your page before.

Shlomo Ben i do see you commented on being a part of the remix project on one of those pages but it was full.shame im sure it would have been bad ass. Yes the art is not all equal in this project and this very blogs name is art . Its next to impossible for me to be negative on the worst pages knowing the cause its for. That being said none of it can touch Sal's

  9. If the figure was like the Michael Golden take on ROM, then it would be hard to pass up. Otherwise it would depend on the interpretation of the artist.

After seeing some of those pages, I have to wonder how some of those artists were selected. I know my own work is just amateurish garbage but some of those were just disheartening to see. I would really like to see someone do all the generations of Spaceknights the way they were portrayed in Infinity #1. That would be a cool project.

    1. yeah it's funny the dude spear heading this project wanted to see my work when i asked him if i could do a page so i know he did with the others too. i think because this is for Bill's benefit people are hesitant to be openly critical about the art work but hey you know me it's a good cause but that doesn't mean i'm not gonna take a jab at some of that mediocre art work none the less.
