What's up with What If?

I remember a couple of years ago I had this friend and fellow comic book nerd from my high school days asked what could I possibly have to blog about every week given that the series ended back in 85? The fool :) I explained it as best as I could at the time to him.  But you guys who come here get to find out right away about most of the coolest shit out there rather it be Rom turning up in an article for a recent publication (Geek mag.), some undiscovered clip art from back in the day (New Warriors Annual #1), a cool Marvel rap video paying tribute to fans calling for the return of Rom or the latest art work that kicks ass. A big thanks to all of you who have contributed to these postings lately you guys have provided some awesome blogging material.
Speaking of which, here's my latest coloring job of a commission piece that was done by Ian Akin from the dynamic inking duo Akin & Garvey. There's only one thing that always bothered me about this other wise kick ass work of art. The right leg is too short, it never looked quite right to me so I made a cropped version which I colored. You can see the original here  http://www.akinandgarvey.com/commissions/index.htm#
just look for the thumb nail button on the left.

If you're noticing any difference in this posting today from the day before when I published it that's because Rom curator Gary Martin Jr. informed me of an over site. In other words I fucked up, indeed there was a not one but two cameo flash back panels in the Nova back story of What If #36 volume1 (1982). Oh and it gets better I actually used to have this issue but don't ask me how the fuck I managed to fucken forget about these fucken panels.

And of course as I mentioned before the Dire Wraiths would show up as part of some parallel universe  story line years later in What If #39 volume 2.

And as i mentioned in the beginning of this posting how cool Rom related things are turning up on a weekly basis here's the latest. So I'm going to make yet another edit today with Chris's latest custom spaceknight figure, Javelin.

  1. Psychedelic coloring job Shlomo. I don't normally go for the lime green, but it works really well here.
What if was one of the great comic book lines. I wish I had read more of them, because I didn't even remember the Wolverine Vampire one, and I think I'd like to.

  2. What if vol2 issue 24 was what if Wolverine was lord of the vampires it was a good one with everyone in it. I never knew about this one vol2 39. Cool dire apperance. Would never know by the title .

Nice color job shlomo i dig the yellow background and the dark blue outline baby blue letters contrast it nicely.

  3. thanks both of you for the words of praise on my coloring work here. i actually had some trouble with that one before. over the past couple of months i messed around with coloring it but i never before was happy with what i came out with. although it's a bit off the beaten path from my past coloring work i'm fairly happy with it.

as for What If #39 Vol. 2 the cover art actually has Dire Wraiths on it too.

  4. It's unrelated, Shlomo- but I told you Gambit SUCKED: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSfpEG3SFc8

What If? was such a cool book back in the day! I never liked it whenever they would try and bring it back, though- because the "what if..." would always be in regards to some current big story I did not give a fuck about.
But What if Captain Marvel Had Not Died? What If The Amazing Spider-Man Had Married The Black Cat? What if No One Was Watching The Watcher??? What If The Vision Had Destroyed The Avengers? What If Dazzler Had Become The Herald Of Galactus? What If The Punisher's Family Hadn't Been Killed? Fucking classics. And let me tell you- What If Spider-Man HAD NOT Married Mary Jane certainly does not end with a deal with The Devil!

And the reason you can post new stuff weekly about a series canceled back in '85 is simple... People still love the character. They always will, because it was well written, designed, illustrated, plotted and planned out. It exists in this magical bubble to me- it can't be brought back or fucked with. It's a classic. Like Sandman, or Preacher, or to a lesser extent The Weird. -Which ironically are all DC books. Sometimes you get lightning in a bottle and it's best to just leave it be *cough*Watchmen*cough*
Maybe that's WHY Marvel won't bring him back... not because of any copyright garbage but because they know better. (I know: HA! HA! ...but think about it.) How many more classic DC comics series that they let stand can you name Vs. how many Marvel ones exist? Besides ROM... the original Captain Marvel... maybe Days of Future Past.
    I don't know... it's just a thought.

  7. JAVELIN!!! Awesome work Chris! (as usual)
He was my favorite Spaceknight of the supporting cast... pretty much spanked Terrax on his own.
Nice coloring job Shlomo! ah... nothing like ending the week with some flashback goodness. KOT, I loved the What If issues too :)

    3. your welcome exhuman! And Shlomo...did the search....WOW. Loved it. I love how much detail this blog goes into about the Torpedo legacy. Brock Jones was Such a great and TRAGIC character. Anybody think the wraith Queen killed Dan Jones....I don't.

    4. another one.....did Michael Stivak (the original Torpedo) know it was the Dire Wraith's manipulating him or did he just think it was his family Senator Stivak trying to corrupt america....I have seen it told both ways....:)
