A package full of fan art for Bill Mantlo's birthday

Left click to enlarge

So before I dropped all this stuff in the mail for Michael Mantlo I decided to take a snap shot of it all for you good people. So I'm sure you recognize my latest fan art which I made some high quality laser prints of. I wanna thank Randomnerd for sending me her copy of  geek magazine from last month which allowed me to make that very readable quality xerox copy. My buddy Randy whipped up some fan art of the U-Foes which first appeared in Incredible Hulk 254 ( Bill & Sal ). We should be seeing a color version in the near future. And from one of my regular commentator's (Joseph) we have something from his ten year old son who loves both the Hulk and Rom and also has half the Rom series but swears who will have them all some day.

There was a little bit of trash talk about the Power Pack series in the comments section of the last posting. But in all fairness I did have at least one issue back in the day. Ironically it wouldn't be for about 27 years later that I would learn the very same issue I had contained a Rom foot note. I can thank Gary Martin Jr. "a Rom curator" for that and in the next posting we can all thank Gary for some of the other Rom related foot notes I'll be posting.

And we're back with some more Dr. Doom even though unlike What If #39 (Vol. 2) this clip art is totally unrelated to Rom or to Bill Mantlo's birthday but I love it so much I'm adding it to this posting anyways. This is such classic Dr. Doom the dialogue and so in keeping with what makes the character so awesome. For the low down on where this clip art is from http://majorspoilers.com/2011/07/10/retro-review-marvel-graphic-novel-27-emperor-doom-1987/
Ok so look, since Dr. Doom mentioned the Sub-Mariner (or Namor if you prefer) I'll stop my childish posturing and throw in this other foot note into the posting I just got from Gary recently that comes from Incredible Hulk 277.

  1. You're welcome, Shlomo. Anything for Bill. That looks like an excellent package. My favorite has to be Joseph's son's drawing. It's always great to see kids recreate their favorite heroes. You can just see the love on the page.

  2. What a great package indeed. My son is stoked that bill will recive his card. He did this at the kitchen table and did from memory. I get a kick out of seeing the legs with no refference.you can tell he was a little undecided how to go about them.lol.he did say he has half the series but its a bit more.he is missing issues 38 to 46 and then 51 to 63.he will not read 47 or 50 or the end 75 until he gets there. I could never do that. He did read all the other tie ins hulk,2 in 1,powerman iron fist, and annual 1 and two.again saving 3 and 4 till he gets there.

Nice job on the Ufoes from randy they look great as do the nice prints

Love the Dr.Doom shot and also the Sub mariner foot note. Always been a fan of subby . What happened to that movie? Seems it went the way of antman.

That power pack foot note is so dang perfect for me.being as my first ROM issues came with doubble the power pack issues. I dont recall anything about them honestly other then that.whats the deal with those outfits? I do remeber they were werid to me as a kid.

    1. The outfits were provided by the alien that gave them there powers, I think. I remember he had a horse face.

    2. Yeah- their costumes had these abstract images on them that represented each of their powers and what they did. But their powers and costumes changed a lot too... I really shouldn't know this much about Power Pack, Gods help me!

    3. Hahaha- and yeah- ROM's arms and legs were the best part- had me crackin' up! You gotta love little kid's drawings!

    4. Yea love the little head as a top thing going on too.ha ha. I now recall another free comic book from school with spiderman and powerpack. We all were like this will be worth nothing (back when kids thought of comics they beat up were as good as gold) typhoid marry is rad a suprise for me she was in an issue you got.

    6. I remember that Spiderman/Powerman/Storm comic. Wish I still had it, but those never made it to the "vault". Oh, capricious youth.
And don't worry, King, a lot of us know things we think we shouldn't. Especially about random comics.
I actually enjoyed Power Pack. For a while, and then the novelty kind of wore off. It's a neat idea, little kids with powers that aren't part of an X-book, but the novelty kind of wore off when it felt like they didn't know where to take them.

  5. WHO DARES TO TALK SHIT ABOUT THE POWER PACK??? ...AND NOT INVITE ME TO HELP CRAP ON THEM!
Although, I gotta admit- that issue I picked up that had Typhoid Mary in it was pretty awesome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eJOu8CSdrg -Only because it was SO inappropriate. And speaking of the good doctor- it also had a great Doctor Doom moment in it!!! A well-written moment of weakness!
Also- Power Pack let kids know that sexual abuse is okay as long as it feels good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiGGNjKSWFk

Okay- I'm done self-promoting, I feel dirty now.
Care package looks great! Sorry I could not get in on it in time- a lot of bad shit going on lately on my end.

That is a great Doom moment, though! I love the character when he is written properly. There was a mini in 2009 (I think) called Dr. Doom and the Masters of Evil and it was fucking amazing! Great writing- nailed the character- and what it builds up to- how it ends- I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. -A character defining moment for Doom.

I've loved the Sub-Mariner (but not as much as his cloned cousin of course) since I saw him in Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends when I was a kid- "This... isn't water- it's... al-CO-hol!!!" Classic.

Good stuff- always dig when you cover other characters a bit... *sigh* Comics used to be so awesome. Do you think the kids of today will look back at what they are reading now in the same way as we look at our old comics? I just can't see it. -But then maybe that just means I really am an old man now.

  6. Nice work on pulling together the awesome birthday package! I never read Power Pack but it was cool that they had a ROM reference. I love the two page spread of ROM and Namor taking on that thing from the deep... one thing about our favorite Galadorian, his adventures are nothing short of Epic :)

  7. Bill is going to be overwhelmed with all of the kindness you people show him. I hope Michael is sure to show him all the awesome care package items you're sending. I sure would've sent you my copy of Geek, just never occurred to me. Gonna let my subscription go on that one; too much attention on video games.
