Some colorized fan art, a new custom figure and Jo Duffy on Rom

This kicks ass, great job! http://custom777.deviantart.com/

And speaking of custom figures the Rom one I had here yesterday turns out to be something I posted 3 years ago. I must have had a senior moment, but I'll leave the link for it since it features that same custom from different angles then what I had before http://thefwoosh.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=10608&start=1995

And here's my latest coloring job. You all remember this U-Foes fan art that was part of the art work care package for Bill Mantlo's birthday right? I also wanted to thank one of my regular commentator's RT for mailing me a copy of Daredevil #127 which featured the first action appearance of Brock Jones as The Torpedo. Who says selling insurance can't be fun?
But that's not all RT was up to last week he also made friends on farcebook with a certain Jo Duffy who was the editor for Rom spaceknight issues 1-18. I think you'll find what she had to say rather interesting during one of their correspondences.

"Actually, a group of us plotted the first issue of ROM, before Bill came on board. Jim was definitely an important part of the group with some critical ideas, and Bill modified them to fit his style when he took the reigns. All the toy company gave us was ROM, his name and powers, and the fact that the enemies he fought were called Dire Wraiths. I think the dust outlines of the banished wraiths was Bill and Sal's idea, but was inspired by mid-century science fiction flicks, like the Gene Barry version of War of the Worlds. The group created the young lovers who befriended ROM, and set the mandate that Steve be a sympathetic, likable rival. Bill developed them and gave them their names. The wraith's true forms were kept secret to build the suspense. And ROM sent them to limbo as a kind of prison sentence. No one wanted or could care for a hero whose idea of protecting the innocent was to commit genocide against even the worst villains."

Jo Duffy

That's probably gonna do it for this month but we'll kick off December with some more Dire Wraith brain draining fun.

  1. I thought "that might be the best ROM custom figure ever" so I consulted my vault to compare...yep, it's my favorite. Found out I had saved another photo of it, guess where I got it?

    1. oh brother! I must be getting senile I have seen that custom before and even posted it even though it was over 3 years ago. but it looks different here and in the photos I linked it to. over 3 years ago, by the Gods of Galador I hadn't realized how old this blog was!

  2. I'm impressed that you got the scoop on Jo Duffy! Thats some great info! Your coloring job is fantastic! I mean,..wow! ..As far as that custom ROM goes, its good, and I like it, but the Torpedo shown in the link just wasn't to my taste. I'm not a custom snob I just think a few things, like the colors were off. Also I don't really like ball hip joints. They just seem to make the figures look weird. Congratulations on another great posting that got me thinking,..maybe its time for a Torpedo custom!

    1. Chris, I think my favorite of your figs (so far...are you going to do a more faithful ROM himself?) is Starshine 2.0, followed very closely by...nah, that's too hard to choose a #2.

I hope I do rock the Brock when I make him! Thanks for the votes of confidence! Wow, the more I hear about that Starshine custom the happier I am that Bill Mantlo's got her with him! I can't tell you all how much I appreciate your support. It means more than I can express.

  3. WOW thanks for the mention Shlomo! It was really nice to talk to Jo Duffy. She said she really misses Bill and enjoyed talking to me as it brought back memories.I asked her who plotted issue #1 and came up with Brandy and Steve. I also asked her about whose idea it was that the wraith's look like they are being destroyed ("dust outline") and she of course said that was Bill and Sal's. One of the coolest things about Rom #1 is that they thought he was a killer due to that. From her comments it seems that Bill had more creative control over issue 1 than what Shooter has told us. I love the color job on the U Foes. I remember how awesome I thought they were as a kid. They just look and looked so awesome.
