ROM spaceknight vs The Brood

Left click to enlarge
This actually isn't finished it's a horizontal drawing. But I just don't have the time right now to finish this Sunday afternoon sketch today because as it is I should have used this time to get some studying done and or get to my fucken taxes. With everything that's going on right now I just needed a mental break and sometimes putting pen or pencil to paper does the trick. Nothing new or exciting since my last posting as far as ROM related stuff goes. None of the fan art I've seen had me saying "wow" to myself and even though some new videos have turned up it's nothing we haven't heard or seen before. They were a lot of the  . . "ROM was a Parker Brothers doll . . . the comic outlasted the toy (insert commonly found clip). . . Marvel lost the rights to the character (insert more commonly found clip) . . .and  . . huh . . zzzzzzzz..zzzzz . .zzzzz".

Feb. 25th update: Big thanks to Gary Martin Jr. who sent me these screen shots and the following quote today . . .
"The Oscar has been awarded, the Blu-ray released, and we now have our best look at The Torpedo's treatment in the movie Big Hero 6.  While they couldn't give us a closeup on the display suit's helmet, I was surprised to notice on the latest viewing that ROM-related back story comic Marvel Premiere #39 appears prominently!"

On a side note I wanted to remind you all that the cover of ROM spaceknight 26 makes a brief appearance in an opening scene in Tron Legacy. Just this past Valentines Day Weekend I was in Santa Cruz and visited the comic shop from a scene in The Lost Boys where we catch a glimpse of ROM Annual 2.

  1. I think this might be one of your best sketches ever, Dave. So thank you for taking a brain break. We all need them. They refresh the mind from the mundane tasks that make up the majority of our lives, and allow our imaginations to wander briefly in the realm of wonder before having to return to the world of "I have to do this so I can have a few hours of fun with what I really love to do."
So thank you for taking that break. It allowed me to take this one.

  3. Nice one! Man, it's a good thing they never really teamed up... The Brood and The Wraiths I mean.

You talking about that Atop The Fourth Wall video on ROM? I cringed through a little of it out of curiosity. But I may be biased because I've always disliked that guys videos... He does not really know shit about comics and gets all his information from Wikipedia more or less. Plus he has slammed Sal Buscema, and Bill Sinkevitch's art more than once. -That's unforgivable.

WAKE UP! You fell asleep during your post!

Taxes... already done, received, and spent! I went eBay crazy!!! Holy crap. Sooooo much stuff- my mailman is gonna HATE me.

    1. i just ran through the thumbnail previews of all the ROM related videos on youtube's and i'm not sure which one you're talking about gimme a better lead. the one's i'm talking about were uploaded pretty much all in the past month. but at any rate if this guy talked shit about Buscema and Sinkevitch then fuck em any ways he's an asshole just for that alone aside from the rest of his dog shit video.

    2. I love how I never have to guess what you guy's stance is on anything. :)

    3. Are you saying we're always angry, or always negative?
Because I'm actually a swell guy!

    4. No- he's not on YouTube... or he is, but only older videos... It's a comic-book review web-show for old and mostly "bad" comic books called Atop The 4th Wall. He's on The Nostalgia Critic's site, if you have ever heard of him...
Anyways, yeah- he reviewed ROM as a whole recently. I just skipped through it- didn't have an hour and a half to kill. He didn't diss it or anything- but like I said; he has trashed Buscema's art in the past so...

    5. Not always negative, just always very definitive. And I think you two are actually two of the swellest guys I know on the interwebs. True story. And who the hell trashes Buscema's art?

    6. I know, right? Our Pal Sal is one of the greatest!

Hey- I'm positively definitive about comics on my blog all the time! Shlomo hates how positive I am to certain things over there.

Oh, and I'm not swell- I was lying... I'm really a total ass.

    1. this is basically old news Gunn already mentioned how he'd like to use ROM in a GOTG sequel which i blogged about here January 7th. the current article has nothing more then wishful thinking type information ROM appearing on the big screen or in print is no more closer to reality today then it was yesterday or last month or last year. i also noticed a lot of misinformation in that article like about "cameo appearance" ROM made in The Age of Ultron story line (never happened} as well as hasbro releasing new "ROM toys" when in fact all they did was make a single stupid heromugg doll. sorry about being such a downer but i'm tired of all the ROM return hype over the years that turns out to be hot air i won't believe it until it actually does happen . . and that's still a very big if.

  5. I hear ya, but don't ever give up hoping!

I was wondering about that supposed cameo. That was the first I had heard of it. Figures it was erroneous.

    1. this should pretty much fill you in it was much to do about nothing to begin with when the "cameo" clip art was posted online. and when marvel published the issue with the supposed "cameo" they completely turned chicken shit and made a name change before it went to press have a look at this link

    2. Oh, that's right, I remember that. Talk about anti-climactic!

    3. exactly, it's been shit like that over the past few years that's got me so cynical these days i'm pretty burnt out on rumors, empty hype and a lot of wishful thinking like commentary from Gunn or premier Marvlel artists and writers who are fans of Bill Mantlo's work.

  6. That is a great sketch mate! I like how ROM stands on one Brood already out for the count as the others fly in, that's great stuff. I always wanted to visit the comic shop from Lost Boys growing up. I used to watch that scene and point out to any in attendance the comics I had in the racks behind the characters.

That and the 'Marvel' in Darkman were awesome.

    1. thanks Dan, i'm hoping one of these days my fan art will inspire you to start drawing again to. i'm glad you caught that part in my posting about that comic shop (Atlantis Fantasy Comics) from the Lost Boys. but to be accurate that comic shop changed locations twice in Santa Cruz since then in part because of the Loma Priota earthquake. by the way i added a link to that Lost Boys scene i found a high quality clip on Youtube.
