ROM and Micronauts 2016 unofficial house ad

July 18th Update:
And from the artist (Ron Joseph) who gave us the ROM vs The Herculoids sketch pages here's his latest fan art. Spaceknights are awesome but after looking at this one from Ron I doubt I have the "right stuff" to become one even if genocidal monsters like the dire wraiths or ISIS (actually those jihadi fuckers are trying to) were looking to take over Earth . . .

July 21st Update:

Can't believe after all these years I've had this blog and with all The Micronauts stuff I've posted that I never bothered to feature this retro art work of mine. But I guess I might as well now with what's coming next year. This is an 11 X 17 water color painting I did back in the mid 90s of the Micronauts Aliens line of action figures. I'd love to see IDW make good use of them.

July 24th Update:
Just happened to have come across this custom figure of Stardust. Talk about a custom figure that visually looks just like the way the character was drawn in the comic book issues they appeared in! If your memory is a bit hazy Stardust was a villain written for and first appearing in ROM Annual #1 (front story) with a brief and much later appearance in the pages of Quasar see link below for a quick recap . . .

    1. just had a look at that page thanks amigo. I also noticed some of the future city scape illustrations those are awesome. glad you like the new art work I probably shouldn't be getting so worked up about something that we're not going to see till some time next summer. but I have to admit all the hype all over the internet since last weekend about this latest news has got me pretty worked and that sometimes makes me want to start drawing again. I probably need a time out right now like some kid with too much sugar in his system.

  3. Its definitely ok "this time" to be getting worked up about the return. Great peice and scale is impressive. Tiny Baron Karza and the others sell it with ROM. He seems to know who the good guys are and who the bad guy is. I get that fron this one. Good work!

    1. well Joseph it just goes to show you that size does matter despite what all my girlfriends kept telling me all my life. I can't remember where I read this but apparently there was never a cross over between ROM and The Micronauts back in the day because they were licensed properties from two different toy companies isn't that weird? it's like featuring them with marvel owned characters was ok but not separate characters owned by other companies that marvel has the rights to publish can't be in the same book. anyways, I suspect that won't be a problem with IDW so something like this art work could very well be in a future IDW issue we'll be picking up. hope you had a chance to watch the video link I added to the last posting it's fun and thanks for all the lively discussion this week it's been a fun one for blogging that's for sure.

    2. Yeah I saw the vid and cool hearing the Ditko qoute I mentioned and the tone it was said in. Nice new art with the conversation into spaceknight. It reminds me of the one from spaceknight2 to benefit Bill. Im sure you know the one im referring to.

    3. I must certainly do. but it also reminds me of this scene from the Robocop reboot movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXOhIJg4B7k

  4. Your house ad added to my Goosebumps. Very cool, Dave. Oh, and the one showing ROM being put into his armor is freaky good. Terrifying and electrifying.

  5. Shlomo you should be doing poster artwork for them. The colors on that hit it out of the park.

    1. thanks, I also thought it would have been cool to have done the packaging art for a cool toy line. fantasy illustrator Ken Kelly was probably my all time favorite although he did the art for all kinds of stuff including the classic jacket art for the early KISS albums in the late 70s. anyways, he did much of the packaging art for The Micronauts and The Master of The Universe (He-Man) toy line remember this old posting from 2012? http://romspaceknightart.blogspot.com/2012/04/packaging-art-that-rom-electronic-toy.html

    2. Ah, memories. :). Sometimes I think the artwork on toy packaging gets overlooked, but people forget that if the packaging looks cheap the toy probably won't get a second glance from an unknowing customer.

  6. Nice update of your painting. Very good work and I agree would fit those old packaging art. Cool linking back to that post. I must have overlooked that one . Enjoyed it! Ps. I still have not seen that robocop remake but what a scene that was. It does go well with that fan art.

    1. Centaurus is my favorite in your painting. Though your Membros looks very much like his box art style. Lobtros (think thats his name) would have looked good in this group maybe.

  7. there were two other Lobros and Kronos but I didn't like them as much as these you might want to take a quick look at this link http://www.kenkellyfantasyart.com/articles/article/6960632/125283.htm
anyways thanks for the kind words this is one of the best pieces of fan art I've ever done I always thought. by the way what's up with your boy Dann Phillips? haven't seen him anywhere on social media in regards to the IDW news not to mention any new fan art. weird considering how much he's done over the years for ROM and The Micronauts. off to work now, later.

    2. seems you're right, thanks for sharing those links . . . but um yeah like I said earlier his stuff these days just doesn't do much for me his most recent upload to deviant art left me kinda scratching my head no pun intended. the recently discovered ROM fan art by Ron Joseph has been a real breath of fresh air it really has that "WOW" factor to it. he uploaded an inked version to his deviant art account of that page I featured in the previous posting. hopefully that will eventually lead to him inking and coloring the other pages that would be sweet. some other guy also recently uploaded some ROM fan art layout pages but they're fucken awful despite being in full color. ROM is drawn in this really goofy and robotic way and he actually holsters and cocks his neutralizer like it was a conventional gun. you'd never hear the end of it on this blog if IDW came up with something like that.

      Delete
    3. Hahaha about the cock a netralizer . Forget that. Yeah that guys stuff is really nice. Ron Joseph's. As for Dann ..I really like that ROM where he is getting shot the most of his new works. Though the Micronauts one is nice too. I will say this though we know alot of his works (me seeing my avatar every day on my kids wall) . I still think his work is quite superior as a whole vs a number of modern freelance artists. He does ROM and Micronauts so well. Probably due to fact of him drawing them so much . He clearly loves them both. Some are better then others by him but thats ok. He has given me that WOW factor before and at times not so amazed but thats fine. I didnt seen the latest on deviant art will have to check it out. I agree about seeinh Ron Joseph's stuff colored would be awesome. I liked what we seen so far. I just told my son who is out of town about the IDW news yesterday. I explained they wont be using the marvel stuff. His response was " IDW!! Thats awesome!! I was like oh you like IDW ? His response was "DuH..Ghostbusters mass hysteria, transformers regeneration one..IDW is awesome, they will do a good job" He was very confident and mentioned how cool a new ROM action figure from Hasbro could be. I said what about yours from chris though..he goes oh that ones better thats the only one in the world . Lol

  8. That art-work is AMAZE-BALLS! Nice job!!!

This site kept the hope alive... and now, look: we will actually see a NEW ROM comic book!
Even if we fucking hate it- dude; a fucking NEW ROM COMIC! That's pretty amazing. Who woulda thunk it???

glad to see you're feeling so optimistic about it. I had so completely given up on ever seeing a new ROM series that I think i'm still shell shocked from the news even though it's been over a week now. it better not suck! I swear to God if it looks anything like what this guy came up with recently I will wipe my ass with it and mail it to IDW's office and make sure it says "Attention Chris Ryall" above the address . . .

as always XOXOXO, you're right about the packaging art for toys. it can make a even a mediocre toys seem cool to a kid I think the Masters of The Universe (Ken Kelly art) was kind of a good example of that even though I had a ton of those back in the day. and then in other cases you have great toys and great packaging art to go with them like with The Transformers and G.I.Joe.

    Joseph
for the sake of your son's innocents and emotional health let's hope the ROM relaunch doesn't disappoint. speaking for myself I know I suffered on both those fronts in my youth when steve ditko took over for Sal Buscema on ROM spaceknight.

  11. I think kids are more forgiving in general about their comics and cartoons and movies. The Star Wars prequels are a great example of this. This new generation doesn't mind them nearly as much as we who grew up with the originals. I think the only thing I've seen my son get truly upset about was the first time he heard someone other than Mark Hamill do the Joker in a cartoon. He refused to believe it was the Joker and insisted it was a plot twist.
