The Inside Scoop

Previews Comic Shop catalog January 2016 issue 328
Something interesting I came across last night. No time for a fancy posting just a quick copy and paste . . .

Rom the Space Knight #0 will feature an introductory 10-page story of Rom’s arrival on Earth, an incident that sets up an ongoing Rom series launching in July 2016.
“Many people have only heard of Rom but that’s it,” continued Ryall. “And those that do know of his past iteration might have some preconceived notion of what this series will be. And while we can promise that the DNA of the character as established with the original toy remains intact, there will be surprises galore as people experience a new universe built entirely around Rom and company.”
As an added bonus, the issue will contain additional content including character sketches, creator interviews and a glimpse of things to come. This debut represents a major launch for IDW and Hasbro next year, and this special first story will be free throughout the universe next May!

  1. Personally, I'm very excited for this new take on ROM, I think it couldn't be in better hands with a true fan like Chris Ryall at the helm. This description sounds very promising, beyond everything else we've seen & heard so far - I am so glad to hear that it is going to be respectful of the source material, building on the core concepts & elements we all want to see. I'm most excited to see it all start from the beginning again as a self-contained universe that isn't polluted by being in the Marvel universe anymore.

Can't wait to get the FCBD issue - looking forward to the bonus material (character sketches!) mentioned in your post.

    1. yeah too bad we have to wait almost a half a year to see it. I find my self having the exact same feeling about the IDW ROM relaunch as I do about Star Wars The Force Awakens. I want both of them to be good so bad it'll be such a long lasting downer if they disappoint. a couple months after the Phantom Menace came out I saw George Lucas at a café with his daughter in San Anselmo which is a small city in Marin County just north of San Francisco. I came so close to walking up to him and telling him how disappointed I was with that movie but I opted to leave him be.

  2. Yeah, it's tough for a movie or other form of entertainment to live up to personal expectations, especial when you are heavily invested in it as a passionate fan. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a good experience from IDW ROM (and Star Wars).

That's simply amazing that you randomly saw George Lucas in a café like that - I think you could have told him you were dissapointed in a polite manner & it would have been okay.

  3. Also - did you see this news? Hasbro has mentioned ROM in passing as part of their plans for an upcoming 'cinematic universe' tying their toylines together!!

    2. Someone sent me that link a couple days ago. Honestly, I don't get worked up about stuff like I'm really burnt out on unsubstantiated Rom related rumors. When i start seeing some results like the new IDW series then maybe I'll get excited. Got tickets to see Star Wars this Sunday afternoon look out for my Rom/Star Wars cross over posting at the end of the weekend. And just for the record seeing Lucas that day would have been so much cooler had the phantom menace not sucked so bad.

    5. True....but the cool part of the article is the Rom pic they used for it!

    6. Ah yes I did happen to notice that. Next best thing to finding your Rom fan art on the resder's letter page in the back of a comic I might think.

  4. I'm more concerned about the latest proposition, that Rom and a few other Hasbro properties are headed to the "Hasbro movie universe" now, side by side with the Transformers.

If the Bay-man is involved in a Rom movie, it will be absolutely NOT the Rom that was created and loved by fans over the decades - guaranteed (as much as that means when projecting something that hasn't even been worked on yet).

Bah. IDW will hopefully do Rom justice. If not, I will become a "true Rom historian" and completely ignore what "will have come after". I look at it just like all the revisions to the Bible over the centuries. Literally. Diluted crap.

I am bordering on sounding negative towards IDW's Rom again.. and it's hard not too. To me, one voice that doesn't matter, they have lot to uphold and make at least as good, if not better, than Rom #1-50 (maybe 65). Rom in a universe side by side with Bay's Transformers, Micronauts movies, etc? (shudder) Rom is worthy of being a LEADING FRANCHISE, not something tacked onto others. The fact that M.A.S.K. is being included in this declaration is NOT reassuring. I literally see Rom becoming a 17 year old valley boy (which I am from the valley - so I can berate my own kind) who talks smack - like some retarded Spider-Man. Brrr.

    1. I may not be appropriate to post here soon, because I may well become what the title of your Blog advertises against depending on how things go. )-:

    2. My apologies. In my angst and annoyance, I said it was the Transformers universe. It's actually the GI Joe movie universe... which.... I just can't even comment further. OMG.

    3. Years ago when I discovered all the Rom related fandom on the net I used to try and reach out to other fans but got next to no response. Eventually I got fed up with that shit, not mention everybody posting the same ol clip art and story about the toy and comic book series. That's basically where the blog title came from. As for all this movie shit like I said in my previous comments I don't put much stock in it. I'm not a big Bay fan either although I thought the first Transformers movie was quite good all the sequels along with the rest of his movies are an explosive piece of shit like a bad case of the runs.

    1. doubtful unfortunately, all the other spaceknights are owned by marvel. it's more likely when other spaceknights start to appear in the series they will be completely new characters.

  6. Boy, they really are shoving those digits right in our faces on that cover, eh?
I was saddened by the lack of mitten hands on our hero- but it's not like that's gonna stop me from checking out the series!
Maybe by issue #6 he'll have a Johnny Tremain type accident and the mittens will be back!!! Ha!

  7. Need the mitten hands. How someone that loves ROM so much could change that I'll never understand. I understand making changes because Marvel owns the rights to all the supporting cast, but to my knowledge they don't own the rights to the mitten hands. To me this isn't ROM...just like I prefer Superman with the red briefs. I know it's minor, but that's the character I grew up loving.

    1. thanks for the input back Gregg. sorry you feel that way it seems most of the rest of us are having an easier time keeping a more open mind about this rebooted ROM. i just found out earlier this evening that marvel is pretty much using the term "spaceknight" in just about every corner of their cosmic narratives (like with Venom and now with Guardians of the galaxy) with out it having any sort of connection to ROM or Galador. i'm so sick and tired of what marvel keeps doing with every aspect of ROM's legacy that i'm even more ready to embrace a new direction, fingers and all. even if marvel had picked up the rights for ROM the marvel universe as it is (especially in light of Galador's destruction) would never be able to do the character justice any more. i'm ready for something new.
