Spaceknight in Seattle

Been meaning to add another sketch card to my collection for a while now but just hadn't been feeling very artistically inspired lately. But with my most recent trip to Seattle I got an idea based on all the souvenir and gift shops with all the Seattle this and Seattle that merchandise but keep in mind I say that with Seattle still being my all time favorite U.S. city. Too bad it's almost as expensive to live there these days as it is in San Francisco. Anyways, that's nothing that ROM would have to worry about so here you have it a silver spaceknight in The Emerald City. Unfortunately, ROM never made it up to Seattle or to The Pacific Northwest in general during his original series but it sure would have been cool. That would have been so awesome seeing ROM use his neutralizer to banish a dire wraith posing as a Starbucks coffee employee. Not too far from reality actually when you think about it given Starbuck's already fairly successful plan for world domination.

  1. No doubt Bill would've hit it out of Kerry Park (thanks Google; never been there myself). Chris Ryall, Christos Gage & Ron Joseph just did ROM in Seattle, in Wednesday's ROM: Revolution One-Shot (I liked it...and the awesome Handbook homage in the back!). And, super-coincidentally, Sal Buscema drew ROM in front of the Space Needle on a variant cover that I'm waiting on Desert Wind Comics to get back to me about ordering! Dave, scroll down at http://comicvine.gamespot.com/rom-revolution-1/4000-550399/ , look at the Sal cover and squint your eyes a little bit, you will see Original Marvel ROM. ;-)

    1. now that is what i call ironic! needless to say i had no idea about those covers when i did that sketch card yesterday. the Seattle cover variant done by the artist signed as K/C on the bottom right looks really nice over all. plus it's one of those cases where the artist interpretation of the updated look works pretty well i probably could have given the new series a shot if ROM actually looked like that in the interior art. sad to say however the Sal Buscema Seattle cover variant is pretty mediocre i dunno what's up with Sal lately but his cover art variants for both Onyx and ROM has been rather uninspiring.

  2. I'm finding a great deal of inspiration in the who-woulda-thunk fact that ROM is so ubiquitous again! Now that Revolution is under way, there are a LOT more creators handling him, both writers and artists. As with anything, some are going to be so-so and some amazing, which is all eye-of-the-beholder debatable, anyway. But Sal being in the mix is great. Space Needle aside, this latest cover of his maybe only suffers a bit from the background lacking detail. Both his Onyx & ROM #1 covers had that in spades.

    1. yeah i don't like that Sal cover mostly because of the way he draws ROM in it he just doesn't look good. was planning on going to my LCS today anyways i'll have a look at this Revolution stuff if for nothing else just to see Ron Joseph's interior art.

    3. Hey Gary, nice to see someone paying attention to ROM #3.
And, I don't remember if you said so or not, but did the sketch cover get to you safely??

    4. Definitely paying attention, and we're both lucky they're paying some attention to us...congrats for your full page of art being published, Dann!

I did get the sketch cover so it's one of the prize possessions in My ROM Vault. I think the only thing I did back atchya was positive feedback on ebay, plus I showed Dave your sweet envelope art. :-)
