Anyways, back in early 2018 my wife and I decided to go visit some family in Detroit but the trip didn't happen until later in the year. In the run up to our trip I learned about the Robocop statue project which was supposed to get it's unveiling just before our trip so I was pretty excited about that. Unfortunately that didn't happen and there would be over 7 years worth of delays. But as of November last year, the the seemingly endless delays finally came to end and Detroit has it's Robocop tribute statue for all to enjoy. I may be due for another visit to Detroit this year.
January 27th Update: I don't know any details as of yet but I just literaly learned a few minutes ago about the passing of the great SAL BUSCEMA! In some ways Sal Buscema is even more responsible for getting me into ROM then even Bill Mantlo given that I was following the stories in comics from the art more then from the writing back in the early 80s. Afterall I wasn't even quite into my teens back then. Sal also co-created the Sabra character which I'm a fan of so I'm grateful for that as well. Rest in peace sir, your work was one of the many things that made the 1980s epic.March 16th Update: I came across this splitscreen art work in a youtube tribute video that was uploaded in recent months. I knew right away it wasn't actual clip art from the series yet it looks like it could be so ofcourse I wanted to know who the artist was. But after passing it along to a freind and fellow ROM fan it was suggested to me that it might be AI which actually makes sense. Well regardless of wherever it actually comes from I love it. It captures that late 70s and 80s Marvel vibe perfectly and in general is just all around damn good. This sort of look and quality art would have been a worthy successor to Sal Buscema in my humble opinion.

Hello! I found your 2010 blog post about Ditko on Rom here in 2026 while trying to decide if I want to get Volume 5 of the Epic Collection of Rom. Rom was the first comic I collected as a kid from the first issue. I loved it, and I had (and still have) the toy. As a kid/teen, Ditko also ruined Rom for me. All respect to the man for what he created, but he was not the right artist for Rom. I do seem to remember not liking the direction the story took, but perhaps that was because I disliked Ditko on it so much.
ReplyDeleteI sold those issues a long time ago (although a friend gave me a couple of his original singles). But I've been enjoying re-reading them in the Epic Collection format. I did not think they would hold up story-wise, but they surprisingly do! A little verbose, especially in the early issues, but still a whole lot of fun.
Now with Volumes 1-4 in hand, I cannot decide whether to pretend it ends there (with Brandy leaving the Starshine armor) or to be a completionist, knowing I probably will not read those issues!
well, thank you for all that i'm glad i decided to leave the comments option on for this posting for a change. nice to hear from someone over here after all these years now. you just about covered it when it comes to all things Ditko and ROM. as far as i'm concerned ROM and Brandy's story ended with their appearance at Rick Jones's wedding. unless you want to count the brief ROM appearence of ROM in Limbo from the alternate reality of the Universe X series in 2001. X-Man 31 which came out in 1997 was a good Hybrid return story. the 3 issue mini series Winter Guard in 2010 was a dire wraith follow up to ROM's adventure in Siberia from the orignal run. that wasn't bad i think of that as legit continuity. there was ofcourse a handful of New Warriors issues at the end of the late 90s series that basically wrapped up all things Torpedo related. but that's it for me, all that stuff i mentioned brought the ROM and all things ROM related to a conclusion. other then Winter Guard you can disregard EVERYTHING else in the 2000s.
