New ROM logo header concept

So look what I just found. I've been mostly leaving links to newly discovered Rom related fan art on my postings but I thought this one would be a good posting because it's especially unique. From a design stand point I think it's pretty damn nice. And that's coming from someone who's done logo design and worked as a commercial graphic artist for 10 years. But as far as a header for the comic book goes I'm not sure it quite makes for an ideal replacement. Maybe it's because I've been seeing the original almost my entire life now or because the original "pops" in a way the more subtle redesign. But just to be clear I do like it I think it has merit for perhaps a house ad or some sort of packaging art.

How about a little Sabra to go with your ROM posting today folks? And speaking of Jewish superheros from the Marvel Universe.

I recently picked up a copy of Incredible Hulk#319 from a dollar bin at a comic convention I was at
recently. I used to have it back when it first came out in 86 because it had a ROM flash back cameo in it and I wanted to read it again after all these years. It also had a guest appearance by Doc Samson who I didn't learn was a Jewish character (born Leonard Skivorski, Jr.) until after I had made (that fucken figures!) a video for Youtube about Jewish comic book superheroes only about two years ago.
Notice how Samson has long hair? Well in the biblical fable of Samson & Delilah he derived his superhuman strength from his long hair, and when it was cut he became vulnerable. Basically you've got an Achilles Heel sort of analogy. The biblical Samson was also Jewish in case you didn't know or surmise that already. It's kinda ironic also but probably not a coincidence that the gamma ray Samson is a psychiatrist given the amount of Jews in the field of medicine and psychiatry historically. Unfortunately I don't happen to be one of them otherwise I'd be better off these days I bet.

  1. I really like the new logo concept! It's stronger with a thicker font and the ROM/O just seems a nod to all great 80's sci-fi concepts. Nice find Mr!

  2. I like the idea of having the ROM outline in the O, but I agree, Dave, something just feels "off" with it right there. I think it might be the red outline? And I definitely don't like the M being that fat. If that's the right word. But it's a good concept, overall, and I think with a little tweaking it could be great.

  4. That's a great header and it totally gets my vote. Cool pick of a Hulk comic! Byrne's six-issue run was definitely an interesting experience. I covered this very issue in my Comics 'n Coffee column just last Sunday! It's a very important issue in the Hulk's continuity. Be well, brother!

  5. The new logo is nice, it's strong and I'd go with it. I do agree with the something being off. Maybe it's the ROM in the O. So instead of ROM being there I would put the gun in there with the red muzzle showing.

And Shlomo, what issue is the Sabra art from? I've been trying to find it.

  6. well it's too bad the deviant art page i found this on never responded to the comment i left a couple of days ago. i think the artist would have appreciated seeing what you all have to say about his or her work.

  7. I think the new logo is coolish, but I just love the simplicity of the old one. So I'll go with a nay (I feel like a Son of Anarchy here)

  9. That logo would totally work on a ROM relaunch (hahaha- like that will EVER happen...) but looks to snazzy for/on the classic covers. I agree, the original ROM header is just... just... SO AWESOME.

I like to put Sabra on my pita-chips...

    1. *too snazzy? Me am good not grammar.

    2. huh, i didn't think about it as a prospect for a hypothetical relaunch that's sharp thinking K.o.T. as for your grammar who cares it's all stream of consciousness just like your vids.

  10. I don't particularly mind the new logo idea but on a classic ROM it just looks out of place.
Now on a NEW series, damn straight that would look good.

    1. hello there Doctor have you visited this blog before? i'm not sure as of yet how to categorize (ye or nay?) those of you who want to leave the logo alone on the original series but want the new one on a hypothetical relaunch.

  11. And then there's those of us who can't leave things alone and want to futz with them. :) I still say lose the red border and put the blue back. And streamline the M. But yeah, not on the old comics. Leave my classics alone.

  12. I did post one reply before but I did not sign it. Dropped my sonic screwdriver and when I bent down to pick it up I uploaded the comment. Oh well, no harm done. Otherwise I do visit your page often and I do enjoy it quite a lot.

  13. I have to agree on the "M" being off. I also am not fond of the gradient used running top to bottom, light to dark. I think it might work better and be more faithful to the old logo to treat it like a neon gradient of the letters. I think that could be a refreshing take.

    1. seems like even people who like the new logo are having some trouble with that M. maybe if the "valley" dipped a bit lower people would find it more agreeable?

  14. The valley needs to come down a bit and at the same time you need to bring the two peaks up as well in my opinion. Balance the two. But that's just my 2 cents (now .675 of a cent adjusted for inflation)

    1. well again, i'm not the guy who came up with that logo i just found it an posted it here. and unfortunately the artist never responded to my comment on deviant art other wise i might be able to get him to chime in over here.

  15. This to me looks more like a major league baseball logo then a ROM logo. I too prefer the orginal .
