Halloween is almost here and something dire this way comes

Left click to enlarge
Well it's just a few more days till Halloween and when I think of some of the scariest moments in the Rom spaceknight series this gate fold from issue 49 comes to mind. Shortly after the introduction of the female dire wraith witches to the series we see them waste little time in plotting their revenge on Rom and Starhine as they descend upon the unsuspecting town of Clairton in what would be a massacre giving the readers some of the most shocking moments ever in the pages of Rom.

Looks like this guy is ready for Halloween all he needs now are some dire wraith cosplayers. Rick Hansen sent me this Rom cosplay photo through face book. Unfortunately no details about who, what or where came with it. So if any of you know something about this speak up, don't leave the rest of us in Limbo. All that aside I just love seeing new Rom fandom turn up week after week in one form or another.

And speaking of the Massacre of Clairton lets have a moment of silence for one of the fallen . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . However although fallen but thus far not forgotten we have this custom Torpedo figurine I found on ebay out of Italy of all places. But apparently there is a limited run of these given that two have sold at this time. The thighs are a bit on the bulky side but it other wise looks pretty good.
By the way wouldn't that be cool if somebody came up with some Torpedo cosplay? I can't imagine that being a costume too terribly difficult to fabricate. Hell, even a sexy dame doing some Turbo cosplay would be pretty great too. Some Sabra cosplay would be great to see as well.

Last up, here's something I found from 2012 MTV Geek

  1. Heh. They got some of their list. I used to read a lot of Power Pack. You know the scene that sticks with me the most? When they tried to pull off the old Han Solo talking into the radio bit. Weird the stuff that stays in your brain.
I'm finding it interesting how much ROM is popping up on people's lists these days. I wonder if Marvel is going to notice.
That ROM costume is sweet! Easily one of the best I've seen. Now we just need about four thousand little trick or treaters dressed as dire wraiths to come to his door.

    1. i'd like to know about the "eyes" and how they went about that exactly.

    2. Leds would work. Also...and I hate to think it...Photoshop. But if that's the case why didn't they put it on the neutralizer too?

  2. I also wonder how they did the eye thing on the costume. I could see using red LEDs mounted on a headband behind a black sheer mesh.

As for the last entry, there seems to be no end to the number of people that want to see ROM return. Except at Hasbro and Marvel.

  3. Yes that gate fold is creepy indeed. Deff part of the most creepy momments in ROM. For me this 49/parts of 50 ,issue 36 with that little boy,and issue 72/73 with insane spaceknights all fall into that group.

Nice costume . I would think LEDs as well for eyes. If you look very close seems to be two other discs perhaps with LEDs in them not turned on or finished at the waist. Very awesome pic (thanks rick) perfect for Hallowen

Power pack ? No please no ...

    1. Brian, and that's why we don't buy new stuff from marvel any more right? : )

Joseph, yeah i was never big on Power Pack either. i did have issue 9 back in the day however. interestingly enough that issue contained a Rom foot note i never knew about back then that only last year Gary Martin Jr. brought to my attention. by the way my Nov. 1st posting will have something in it you'll be happy to see.

    2. Cool , power pack came in those same multi bags for a buck ROM came in when i was a kid. Never failed sometimes 4 issues to every one ROM issue. Thats were my dislike stems from I quess. Lol *correction from above 73/74 * though the beyonder is creepy in anything he is in. That one with the little boy on the scarecrow really bugged me when i was young .it didnt end happy and i didnt get to read the follow up till adulthood so that one issues creep factor stuck with me for a long long time

  4. That ROM costume is awesome - and truly a dedicated fan right there! As for the list, the crew are right... Whatever happened to Marvel Swimsuit Specials?

  5. Wow, that's actually a pretty damn decent custom ROM costume there Shlomo. Props to the guy who made this.

And yeah, that scene with the Dire Wraiths about to invade an unsuspecting town really does look downright creepy and eerie. Sal Buscema art right?

  6. yep, penciled by Buscema and inked by Akin & Garvey. the wraiths were hungry and wanted to stop by for a snack. much like zombies they want your brains.

    1. I think they're scarier than zombies, honestly. They have more intelligence. A plan for world domination. And aside from the rotting corpse smell, they definitely turn my stomach more. I'd love to see a costume of one of these guys.

    2. agreed! a well done Dire Wraith costume would be the shit. as for the world domination part i dunno, did you see World War Z?

    3. It was a great movie, but I think of that more as swarming or infestation than actual domination.

  7. Wanna say that I really admire that ROM costume and would love to see more photos of it in action. Hope they take & share some more if they go trick or treating. Happy Halloween everyone!

  8. i just found out the name of the guy who that costume came from is Steve Manale. i found him on farce book and sent him a friend request, we'll see if anything happens.

    1. how about that he accepted the request and here's what he had to say about the costume . . ."It's a bit embarrassing—I made it the day of the contest! I spent over 7 hours on it. I had assembled the things I needed earlier in the week. Cardboard, foam core board, hot glue, and luckily American Apparel was having a giant sale on trashy, shiny clothes. There's an amazing store in Toronto called Active Surplus that has all manner and size of LED lights, so I swung by there. I used this super-reflective metallic wrapping paper that I spray-glued to the armour. The Neutralizer is foam core board, and the boots have been painted so many colours for so many different Halloween costumes they're getting thicker and heavier each year. I only burned through one can of silver spray paint this year. Wish I had time to do the trademark Rom feet. The gloves are the same fabric as the legs and arms, but I dont have a sewing machine so I used staples to 'sew' with. That's how ghetto this costume is."

    2. For the 7hours work it came out amazing . I hope he won the contest he entered. I like how he was mentioned the feet if he had time.that brings a smile. Best halloween costume i seen this year hands down!

    3. Me too Joseph, I smiled at the feet comment because I had the thought earlier that one small criticism on this costume could be the boots are missing the little vent lines, now we know why. Still I'd choose Steve's as the best ROM costume seen on the 'net, Floating World SpaceNight's and Marvel Live's tied for 2nd. I think those are the only 3 online. ;-) I'd like to see one someday with a better proportioned head (a 'helmet' a little smaller than Steve's). Great job gathering that extra info Shlomo!

    4. this guy did an amazing job on the costume!

  9. That is spectacularly impressive for seven hours work.

  10. That splash page of the Dire Wraiths is fantastic, and that ROM costume is incredible! I'm a huge fan of folks making art or costumes out of whatever happens to be around. That costume is a masterpiece!

  11. love the pages of wraith art. Rom #50 was my second fav issue...after #1. The Torpedo figure is cool and I would love to know who got dressed in that costume!!
