New commission fan art from our pal Sal!

Left click to enlarge
I just found this on comicartfans.com last night. I tell ya, I don't know what's more tragic sometimes. The fact that Bill and Sal couldn't finish up the ROM spaceknight series together (creative differences apparently) or marvel and hasbro not having been thus far been able to work out a Rom return deal.
This is probably the best chance we'll ever get in a very long time to make a push at marvel and hasbro to put their heads together on getting ROM back into the Marvel Universe. If you have any means you have to contact anybody at either company I'd say go for it. In the past I was successful in contacting the editor of Avengers Academy during the Hybrid story line a couple of years ago. Email him at  mheroes@marvel.com and be sure to write "Ok to Print" in the subject line. keep your message short and too the point but feel free to email the same thing from more then one address if you can.

And this was found on farcebook just earlier this morning. Actually Gary Martin Jr. gave me a heads up on this as well as an Ikon spaceknight HeroClix figure a couple of days ago but we just couldn't locate any good images to post. I couldn't tell ya anything about this whole HeroClix thing other that some of the figurines are kinda cool. I see loose ones here and there a from time to time I'll definitely grab a Dire Wraith and Ikon if I ever come across them.

Holy shit look what else I just turned up on farcebook! This amazing piece of digital fan art comes to us from professional artist Hal Laren. This is pretty impressive for a number of reasons. First of all it the image pops I mean it really dazzles your eyes with the use of color and lighting. Second, the guy has a good grip on figure composition that pose looks really good and it's dynamic. The image is slightly stylized but not overly so to the point where it looks too abstract. Pretty much my kinda fan art in every way.

7/29 Update: I just got this message in response to an email I sent earlier this morning about hasbro revisiting the idea of a deal with marvel comics for Rom spaceknight and or new collectibles for him from hasbro. If nothing else at least this shows they actually read their mail. But if more people were to email them ya never know what might come of it (hint hint).

  1. You're going to grab Ikon? I thought you didn't approve! (Or was that me?)

    1. i don't mind Ikon at all. she's no ROM, but i still think she's one of the more positive aspects of all the ROM related new stuff from marvel in recent years. seeing her lead the classic spaceknights in the Infinity series was the most encouraging thing i had seen in a long time from marvel but of course then j. hickman had to go and kill them and Galador off. it makes me wonder if marvel got the rights to have Rom in the marvel universe again what ever kinda story line could they use him for now given that stupid move hickman made.

    2. I remember you liking it at first and then vehemently trashing her too, in comments here and there on my stuff back in the day, Shlomo. Back before Infinity. -When she was new.

    3. nope, not sure where you're getting that from. in fact one of the very last postings I did mentioning her my thoughts about her role in what I thought Infinity was gearing up to was fairly positive.

even after Infinity #1 I never trashed her, just marvel and hickman which is why I do give marvel my money any more as well you know.

  2. I liked Ikon, too. As a character I thought she was interesting, well drawn, and had tons of potential. It wasn't her fault the storyline was crapola. In fact, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she pops up somewhere again. It was a good attempt at introducing a female character into Marvel, without, oh, I don't know. Turning Thor into a girl.
Still kind of tweaked about that.
Sal's picture makes me wonder what a bedroom wallpapered with his artwork would look like. Other than awesome. Thinking logistics here. That's a lot of decopage to consider.

    1. I never liked the design. Plus I'm not a huge fan of gender-swapped characters to begin with. It especially seems cheap when they make a hero or villain a sexy lady now! "Look! -It's a Thor you can FUCK! 'Dem titties! BUY IT, nerds!" *rolls eyes* How about an original, strong female character? Not just- "What if Spider-Man didn't have a dick!?", or "You've always wanted to titty-fuck Captain Marvel or Superman- WELL NOW YOU CAN!", or "Batman is a lesbian now! You know you want it!!!" *shudder* The state of the industry, I swear to the gods...... "Lady Bullseye", fuck you! I've gone and made myself so angry now... I need drinks. -Multiple drinks.

    2. I said pretty much the same thing the other day to a friend. Minus the titty comment. :). It's pandering at one of the lowest levels. Because obviously creating a strong female character from scratch is impossible. And girls couldn't possibly relate to them, because they don't really read comics.

    3. Exactly! -It's time you finally admit you're just a guy in a wig.

    4. And I pull it off so convincingly. :)

  3. A cog in the blog, reporting for duty. ;-)

The ROM Mighty Mugg was one of many exclusives still in stock at the Hasbro booth as of an hour before the end of the con (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvu83jaMjuA). Does anyone know how long it's taken them in the past to put the exclusives for sale on their website?

In addition to the Dire Wraith and Ikon (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1675444/gotg6.jpg) figures & cards in the new Guardians of the Galaxy Heroclix set, there's also a "Dire Wraith Queen" figure (no picture online yet...Volx maybe?), and there's a differently powered & carded "Spaceknight" figure that is the same sculpt as Ikon but painted gold & a blue staff tip instead of Ikon's pink (http://cavalock.blogspot.com/2014/06/cavalock-and-guardians-of-galaxy.html). It seems like all 4 of them are going to be commons, not rares, so that's great news if true.

@Randomnerd, Ikon is supposed to appear along with the Annihilators in next week's "Thanos - The Infinity Revelation" original graphic novel hardcover by Jim Starlin.

    Sal Buscema's still got it!

  4. thanks for all that info. Gary, keep me posted on this "Thanos - The Infinity Revelation stuff" just in case there's anything in it worth blogging about.
also, on a general note to all ROM fans it couldn't hurt to take a minute and email hasbro about a new publishing deal with marvel CustomerService@HasbroToyShop.com

  6. Excellent post! So much good stuff going on. I just love the way Sal draws our pal ROM and that fan art is comic book worthy.

I sent off a few emails, here's to hoping more people will do that as well.

  7. hey how about that my two favorite Floridians. glad you guys are enjoying the fan i've been finding this month indeed some pretty damn good stuff has turned up.
also, don't forget to send an email to marvel as well be sure to write in the subject line "Ok to Print". and having the words ROM spaceknight some where on the subject line probably would be a good idea too.

  8. Sal is THE BEST!

Like that fan-art over too- with the over sized, flat chest-piece... looks nice.

Man, I was SUPER into HeroClix when it first came out. Dropped around $60 to start it up- another $40 over the next few months... before realizing the game-play rules are fundamentally broken. I hated it. Sold all my shit on eBay. It's been years now- I'm sure they've fixed it with expansions and revised rules but... fuck that. They already got my money once!

I'd email them about ROM... but I'd just get the exact same response. Plus- whatever they made, if they DID make something, would most assuredly suck. Pessimistic? Nah; realistic!

    1. well the nice thing about sending an email regardless of how worth while it may, or not may be it only takes a small fraction of your time and zero money to do unlike HeroClix or new marvel comics. it's not really about trying to get hasbro to come up with better merchandise for ROM but about showing an interest in the character which they obviously must have had some idea about before the Comic-Con this year.
yeah i know you don't like the IKON character or the gender swap issue and although i'm not going to argue either point whatever i do like about IKON is far out weighed by everything i hate that marvel has done with the ROM legacy so even stuff with her in it doesn't get my money. if there really is gonna be some sort of continued Thanos story line that has her in it i wonder what the fuck kinda bullshit are the writers gonna come up with as to why she's still alive? or are they going to do like with Hybrid in Avengers Academy and just fast forward through any sort of explanation and just have them show up? fuck em, Infinity #1 is the last time they're getting any of my money.
