As most of you know I already had the photo images of the Rom and Dr. Strange cosplay I had made like over  ayear ago for other fan art projects featured here. So one day I came across this Living Tribunal art on Deviant Art and it totally reminded me of one of my favorite Rom issues. So I started playing around in photoshop and turned out something pretty cool I think. As this started coming together it made me feel down right nostalgic. I sure do miss the 80s I just can't get into the new stuff these days from Marvel or DC. The original Living Tribunal art work (by Daswook) is actually near a full body image which can be seen here: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&global=1&q=living+tribunal#/d4mwbd7

For those of you who are interested in also reading some of Mantlo's non-Rom related work you may want to check out some back issues of The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu magazine. Bruce left a url in the comments section of the previous posting that will take you to a back issue log featuring various kung fu masters of the Marvel Universe including White Tiger. In order to download and read the issues you will need a Rapid Share account and some kind of Comic Book Reader (CBR) software installed. In issue #22 Bill Mantlo gives us a showdown between White Tiger and the unlikeliest of opponents, The Jack of Hearts.

But if all that with Rapid Share and CBR jive is too much hassle for you then at least take a look at some of the clip art from the issue here at Bruce's site: http://admiradoresdebillmantlo.blogspot.com/2009/01/entrevista-bill-mantlo-del-fanzine-bem.html

More newly created fan art coming up next!

    1. yep, as i have with many other artists who did some really good line work art that begged to be colored. much of it you've already seen on this blog.

    2. I thought I recognized your work, and wanted to wait 'til you verified it before I could say "good job". I see improvement in your skill during the time that, as you noticed, I have watched you post other jobs here & on deviantart.

  2. No, you can't get the eighties back in comics, but go into a little girls clothing store, Dave, and the colors will take you back there in full force. *shudder* Sorry, had a flashback to mommy time this weekend.
I love that Living Tribunal piece. Looks like a movie I would have gone to see and then watched in perpetuity on TBS at three a.m.
You know, I've thought about doing the whole comic download thing. Instead of going out and getting issues. It would save space, you can definitely get old issues a heckuva lot easier. And you don't have to wait. Only thing is...I think I would miss holding them.

  3. Again, nice work. I wonder if some of the "Marvel Cosmic" would really play in today's CG world. Look at the "Green Lantern" movie; I really like Ryan Reynolds and thought him a good choice for Hal Jordan but somehow the movie missed in the visuals for me the same as the Silver Surfer seemed somehow "LESS" than my imagination of him from the comics. Would the same hold true for characters like Jack of Hearts, Doctor Strange, The Living Tribunal or Rom as well? Sometimes I think the simplicity and cleanness of the 80's comic artwork allowed the reader to establish his own vision of what was "REAL" to him.

Take Rom's armor. It was illustrated in the same way the Surfer's surface finish was. When I picture a "Real Rom" I see his armor having that whiteness instead of grey and hues of blue as contrasts just like Golden did on his cover work. The armor almost EMITS light rather than simply reflecting it. In the FF movie, the Surfer never had that quality in his CG work and I felt they went far too grey. Rom and the Surfer are characters of LIGHT. They should be rendered as brightly as possible IMHO. I wonder if the CG world really can accomplish this.

    1. when it came to Green Lantern i would have preferred to see Nathan Fillion (TV show Firefly and Serenity Movie)play the role. i like Ryan as a an actor but he just didn't look like Hal Jordan to me like Fillion does. i'm not so sure about how they did Paralax but i otherwise was ok with the CG. when it came to the FF pretty much everything was wrong with those movies. as for Rom's armor i tend to color it with blue and lavender hues. which i think in a CG sense reflect more light then greys. but at the same time we wouldn't want him to look too shiny. that might be a bit cheesy and down play that he's a battle hardened soldier from a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

    2. I still maintain that Ryan could have worked. But the script just wasn't there. Still, Fillion would have been superior. I'd like to put forth David Boreanaz (sp?) as an alternative, though. Good actor, good sense of humor, but has the grit to pull through that battle readiness that Hal has.
