Marvel 80s house ads & promos with ROM appearances part 2 of 3

Sometimes I like to think that perhaps on another Earth in a parallel universe Steve Dikto had never taken over as the pencilar on Rom.  Maybe Sal Buscema was the pencilar for the entire 75 issue run. Or perhaps another pencilar had taken over like Mike Zeck, Michael Golden or John Byrne. Oh well at least there's always photoshop to help with a pleasant fantasy even though it flys in the face of reality.

Part 3 will have some actual house ads & promos again I promise.

  1. Being a huge fan of Ditko's work, I recognise he looks outdated from the seventies... His 50s and 60s work is pure gold, though.

    1. hello Bruce welcome back amigo! Steve Dikto was a great man and creator in the comic book industry for his time certainly. but for ROM in the mid 80s he was not the right artist. it was a real let down from the dynamic and more angular style of Sal Buscema which had so much "energy". when a character got punched or was flying you almost could feel it as the reader.

  4. Prime Director,

    Great series of posts!

As for Ditko, I agree with your assessment. It was too jarring a change from what had been.

To think that my first image of Beta Ray Bill may very well have been from ROM… Odin save me. And good ol' BRB doesn't even have Stormbreaker on that cover/in that issue. He's mistakenly wielding Mjolnir!

  5. This is pure fun. The series would've been even that much better if Buscema had seen it through to the end. His replacement was not good, so it was just the writing/story which kept me reading through to ROM's conclusion.

  6. Wow, for a moment I thought the Secret Wars ad was real! It´s funny (and a bit of sad) to see Rom so integrated in the Marvel Universe back in the days.
