Superskrull vs ROM and Captain Mar-vell variant homage fan art

By Nick Baldwin
Just when I think I can go on a hiatus or other wise let this blog sit idle something else comes along that warrants a posting. In this case we have something that turned up yesterday on deviant art that was actually inspired by some of my own fan art
http://csuhsux.deviantart.com/art/ROM-and-Captain-Marvel-vs-The-Super-skrull-482864758 Rather you want to consider this some variant fan art or more of a homage it's just all around cool and one Hell of a compliment.

And the cool new fan art just keeps on coming! This one by a Brazilian artist turned up on deviant art this very morning check out the full image

Nov. 8 Update: I found myself with a surprising amount of free time on my hands today so I decided to take a jaunt up to the radical left wing shit hole (where soda now costs more then pretty much any where on the fucken planet) known as Berkeley. There's a comic shop up there I wanted to look around at and they happened to have had an October copy of BACK ISSUE! Just read the Micronauts article last night it had a couple of cool extra stuff too as you can see above but it was basically an expanded version of the Micronauts chapter of the Bill Mantlo: A Life Time In Comics tribute magazine.

Nov. 9 Update: Ever since I first published this posting it seems like something else keeps turning up one way or another so here's yet another update. Another fellow over at Deviant Art took it upon himself to color this already. For those of you who don't have an account with Deviant Art just get one already it's free and it only takes a few minutes to set up. You can see the original full size art work here . . .

Nov. 10 Update: It just seemed to be raining ROM fan art over at deviant art last week here's another one I recently discovered it's definitely worth having a look at . . .

  1. I love the Kirby-esque background on that. Not to mention the Shlomo inspired composition. I'm glad it sucked you back in.

    1. in terms of the background yes i'd say it has something of a Kirby feel but the way the characters are drawn to me it's reminiscent of Jim Starlin.

    2. If you're talking about my picture, the background is shamelessly, 100% John Byrne. I used 'The Trial Of Galactus' throughout for ideas, although it's fair to say that Kirby was a MASSIVE influence on Byrne himself. I used a Starlin pic as Mar-Vell's costume reference so that probably filtered through but George Perez is probably my biggest influence as an artist.

  2. I love this, Super Skrull is really cool and I think that match-up would make for an awesome story. Plus throwing in Captain Marvel for good measure never hurts.

  3. I really appreciate the Back Issue find, you know that's just the kind of stuff I'm searching for too! And I have to say it was pretty cool that another artist was inspired to do his own take on one of your pieces. Kudos. ;-)

    1. yeah i thought you'd dig this. but isn't it funny how the writer says "based on a popular toy" . .he kinda got that wrong it was the comic books series that gave ROM any degree of popularity and had a lot to do with making the toy a now pricey collector's item. but at least he didn't say Rom the spaceknight i fucken hate that.

    2. I hear ya loud & clear. Not a comment on the author of this particular magazine article, but I've seen that particular eyebrow-raising chestnut, and others I'm sure you could identify as well, duplicated in many writings on the character. It is one of those things. I'm just happy whenever his name is dropped I guess. Whenever I see 'ROM The Spaceknight' I just think "they must be British" since that's what they always called him in UK reprintings, even affixing THE into the otherwise familiar title logo.

  4. The fan art was an action packed moment to bad at all!

  5. I appreciate the color job, but almost prefer the black and white. Very cool back issue find, makes the trek into Berkley worth the shower afterwards.

    1. when you live as close to Berkeley, San Francisco and Oakland as i do i don't think the stench ever quite leaves you. when i go to visit Oregon early next month it'll probably still be on me : )

    2. Maybe they should drop a febreze bomb on the campus.

  6. Yay, thanks for adding my fan-art in here too!

Your art is intense too, seeing Captain Marvell always makes me teary eyed!

  7. The colored version of that artwork just looks a million time better than it did before. And that's not to say the artwork was horrible, ha ha, it's just that the added colors really make it pop that much more. Kudos to the artist of the piece.

Miss you on FB Shlomo. I know you had to deal with a lot of unnecessary bullshit there and all, but it was still entertaining seeing your photo-shop mock-ups;)

  8. Thanks for the publicity, Shlomo, and thanks to everyone who commented and liked the pic. I'm a real novice at colouring so decided to leave this particular pic to the experts (my friend Mat). However, that hasn't stopped me from doing more than my fair share of coloured work - please feel free to stop by my gallery and check out the Marvel pics in there (although bear in mind this is the first time I've drawn Rom).
