ROM spaceknight Annual 2 splash page re-panel

So I was looking to solicit some opinions of what you folks think of the re-panel verses the original splash page from ROM annual 2. The original ofcourse is penciled by Sal Buscema with inks by Akin & Garvey as opposed to the re-panel by Chris Batista and Brian Garvey. The original features a more dramatic pose for both ROM and his fellow spaceknights but at the same time I find the re-panel having a figure composition appeal I also really like.

Just gonna go off topic a bit here because I'm so stoked that they were finally able to post the most epic scene from Wonder Woman on youtube with out it getting yanked down by the studios.

  1. Not big on the repanel. Lacks a sense of urgency to it. Also the shadowing is more dramatic in the original in my opinion.

  2. I like both, but gotta' agree with Brian here, plus those dark inks by Akin and Garvey really flatter Sal's art here.

Oh,btw, over at https://braveandboldlost.blogspot.com/ Ross just posted a ROM/Steve Ditko Starman team-up. Nice cover actually.

    1. Thanks for the feed back on those splash pages Dale. As for that link, once in a great while that guy comes up with something good but this was not one of those times.

  3. For Rom, it's all in the position of his legs. The wide stance lends a greater sense of a frantic action, which is exactly what was needed here given his state of mind under the Wraith spell. And the Spaceknight Squadron in the re-panel look like they've all stopped and are just standing by, whereas in the original they're in the midst of running in. Sal is a master of body language -- which is all he has to go on with the faceless Spaceknights -- and the re-panel really reveals it.

    2. Yes. I thought it turned a corner when Darby told Rom he was "better than this." The Hasbro U crossovers are becoming a little much, though.

  4. This make me think how truly brilliant this generation of Marvel artists were guys like Sal and Byrne worked on two or three titles a month and managed to produce such quality work on very tight deadlines, today's artists work more leisurely and still can't make their deadlines.
