Group hug everybody, let's enjoy some good art we can all agree on

So I think it's safe to say we've talked the Dikto controversy to death by now so I'd like to lay the matter to rest and get back to talking about something we all enjoy. I love this splash page from Rom 43. Just take a few seconds to look over the details of the scene. Just as Quasimodo marvels at how Rom's armor is a combination of living cells and circuitry so do we marvel at the combination of Sal Buscema's pencils with Akin & Garvey's inking embellishments.

Doesn't that splash page remind you a lot of this scene from an early issue of the Micronauts? Another great panel with lots of cool details both issues were written by Bill Mantlo but this came a few years before Rom 43. Damn, Karza looks bad ass here like Darkseid, Darth Vader and Doctor Doom all rolled into one. And no one ever rendered him better then Michael Golden although I must say Jackson Guice also did a pretty damn good job too. Hey, take a few seconds to check out who else does a good Karza  Phillips http://dannphillips.deviantart.com/art/Baron-Karza-197054493

Speaking of cool art having to do with all things Rom and The Micronauts I wanna give a shout out to Dann Phillips. It's very rare that any of the artists who's stuff I feature here ever come by and say hi much less actually join in on the conversations. Especially conversations as "lively" as the recent Dikto debate. For those of you out there who are smart enough to not be on farcebook don't worry you can always see Dann's latest work at his deviant art gallery.

And let us all rejoice that indeed there is something new to behold in Dann's gallery that was only uploaded a couple hours before I published this posting! Now there's also another piece of fan art in Dann's gallery which was added fairly recently and it features Black Bolt from the Inhumans fighting a collection of Marvel villains including The Abomination. In it there is something of a Rom related Easter Egg let's see if you can spot it.

  1. hey Joseph I'm sorry bro I accidently removed all your comments some how instead of just the one you had deleted. that's the one thing I fucken hate about Blogger is when you leave a comment on someone's blog but then go to delete it you can only remove the content but people can still tell that you had something there which makes it look like there's more comments then there really are under a posting.
anyways, for those of you who were interested to know Joseph did catch the little Rom related "Easter Egg" I was talking about and of course also paid Dann a wonderful compliment on his latest spaceknights fan art piece.

  2. Holy God of all arts,..dudes,..That ROM 43 splash page is just, there are almost no words to describe how awesome it is on every level. The amazingly beautiful pencil work alone is beyond words, but add in that the inks are so perfectly done, and the rich colors. I'm going to find a way to put this on wall, I need to see this everyday. Its that damn good.

    1. YES! now that's what i'm talkn about! that knee jerk reaction you get when your eyes spot something. rather you can explain it or not you know right away you either like or you don't. Buscema and Golden are prime examples of artists that i've always had that reaction to like you do to this splash page. and then there's the flip side of that knee jerk reaction but that's been covered enough already.

  3. That spalsh page always brought me back to that little shot in issue 10. When Dr Daedalus of the first born is amazed by the work by the surgeons of Galador. Some of my favorite pages in all of ROM right there. Some of the best words of The Most High One ever got. Kill him and destroy his weapon to the shocked Dr. and Rachel Sweet

  4. What's the Easter-egg? The little Dire-Wraith between Black Bolt's legs???
That Spaceknight group-shot looks like a sweet black-light poster! And that's a choice collection of rogues in the other one.

  5. Hey man, Tiger and I were just talking- on that post of his with Dan's Suicide Squad art- (I don't know it he's mentioned it already) about us each synchronizing a future blog post where we post a new sketch/drawing/painting of our favorite character... or maybe some obscure character we all do a different version of, or something neat like that... since we're all artistic and whatnot. And the more people we could get on-board the better. What do you think- you up for it?

  6. Excellent artwork. It would be cool to have him do a series of Spaceknights other than the ones we've seen.

  7. Okay- I am being told this undertaking may be problematic. ...but then- aren't all undertakings? Let's make it as easy as possible then- just because I think it's a fun, cool idea. The Deadline is Feb. 27th. Anyone participating will post their submission/blog then.
Email me at numerus_6@yahoo.com if you are seriously game. I will have a list of links compiled, of all the blogs who are in, sent to you so you can add them to your posting.
We'll go with the "theme" of any hero/character/villain you choose, any version, from any time, from any company. Whatever you feel like. It can be any medium- a sketch, pen & ink, coloured-pencil, markers, paint, sculpture, digital, photography... Whatever you like doing, and have the time to manage.
Spread the word to other blogs you may follow. Anyone you think would want to participate. -And on Feb. 27th we can all browse around a virtual comic book art-show... see what everyone came up with!
Only rule is NO CHEATING and using something you've already done. Let's see what everyone can come up with in under 25 days.
Also- don't be intimidated- we are not all professionals. Hell, I have not drawn anything in years, and I was never really that good anyways. If you think you are not very good- it doesn't matter. It's about the fun of it! -Join us anyways. Hopefully everyone will follow Wheaton's Law.

    1. hey man welcome back we haven't seen you here in a while. I loved Sal's work even before Akin & Garvey but their inking just added a little something extra to it. that was some of the very best art work of the Marvel 80s.
