Fan art, all the different ways to "mix it up"

Sometimes I like to draw or paint something when I'm in the mood to do some fan art http://csuhsux.deviantart.com/gallery/  And other times I like to pick up some fan art done by other artists and kinda play around with it in photoshop. But I don't do that because I don't like the art work to begin with I do it because I very much do like the art work but find myself sufficiently intrigued by it so that I want to experiment with variant versions of it.
I do this at least a couple times a week as a hobby but you wouldn't know it most of the time I don't bother posting the stuff I come up with. In this case I am with this one which was originally done by artist Jeff Slemons

Slemons has done at least 3 other Rom pieces that I know of and from it all you can see how he really likes to emphasize the interplay between light and shadow values. He's also excellent in the basic principles of good figure composition like with foreshortening, perspective and anatomical proportions giving his work a very professional look.

Gary Martin Jr. "a Rom curator" has been archiving all (both good and bad) the known Rom fan art out there from over the years. I love nothing more then well done fan art but I'm sorry to say what's turned up in the last couple weeks or so would best be described as abysmal. Unfortunately the latest pages from the Rom Remix project falls into that description for me although pg 4 and 9 are an exception but they're from last year.

As with anything meant to benefit Bill Mantlo I really want to be more enthusiastic about this project but the love for it just isn't there. Obviously a big part of that is all the amateurish looking work in it but after having contacted a hand full of the artists last year working on it I was surprised to find out they weren't even Rom or Bill Mantlo fans per se and in a couple of cases hadn't even heard of Rom or Bill until they got involved in the project. That gives me that feeling you get when you pick up an American flag and find the "Made In China" tag on it.

On a more upbeat note Bill Mantlo recently was given the Bill Finger Award. Never heard of that award but apparently it has to do with comic book writers who never got their due recognition during their careers. There might be something to that the owner of my local comic shop didn't know who Bill Mantlo was when I mentioned Bill to him a couple year back, go figure. For more details on the award go to . . .

  1. Yeah, Bill Finger created Batman. So, that award has clout.

Loved the American flag w/ a "Made In China" sticker on it analogy... I'm right there with you on that project.

And you really pimped out that drawing, man!

    1. well, technically speaking that remix project is a remake and i know how much you love remakes. is that why you never responded about the Star Blazers 1st series animation remake link that i left for you on Youtube? after all you did hook me up with the live action movie even though it wasn't that great. but i was still glad to see it if for nothing else curiosities sake.
by the way did you know michael bay is doing a teenage mutant ninja turtles movie? oh man talk about a recipe for a movie i wouldn't see even if my life depended on it i hate both bay and the TMNT.

    2. Whole thing just seems sloppy to me. And like you said- there is not even much love or knowledge going into the project, so... meh.

I was never into Star Blazers really...
I prefer my anime sword-and-sorcery flavored.

Well, Bay did not write or direct it- so it has THAT going in it's favor at least!

  2. Nice work on making that art really shine. Very good edit of some very good art. Love Starshine and ROMs eyes

Yes the remix it seems you were better off not joining this group. I agree on the over all work being sub par but those few good pages. Still a good cause if they know who ROM was or not.

My son showed me the TMNT trailer and as a die hard fan of the old ones and new he wants to go . That means I have to take him. Even though bay does werid shit to my transformers this looks pretty rad. Prob wont be a bore. Godzilla,Transformers 4, Captain America,TMNT,GOTG in that order looks to be a fun time taking him to the movies.

    1. thanks for the words of praise but oh Jospeh, as a father don't you know by spending money on TF 4 it's like encouraging bad behavior when it comes to Bay. i actually walked out on TF 3 i hated it so much. i wasn't able to get my money back but i did get a voucher for a free movie which i used to see Captain America which i found to be a far more satisfying experience. the Captain America sequel and Godzilla are definitely on my list but as you can guess for the rest of that stuff i'm taking a pass although i might check out TF 4 and GOTG when they turn up in the library some day. but have a good time with your son just the same bro.

    2. Ha yeah i got a good friend who works for cinemark so we always get free tickets. I got about ten on hand for these .We go to the movies ALOT .transformers 1 and 3 were ok . Loved lazerbeak in 3. The second was grabage. I have a love for the transformers that my boy picked up too.so no matter how bad i have to see it because its transformers . kind like the thing remake prequel but that was far worse. Hollywood always out of ideas . At least we got three kick ass batmans. Last movie i walked out on was the first Hulk when he was fighting those dogs. Never seen the rest or did i care too.

    3. that's funny everybody else i know hated the "vulture" looking Laserbeak. well if you're getting in these movies for free what the fuck why not i suppose. i love the Transformers too but it's like bad Rom fan art i just won't endorse it in any way if i hate the quality. i love the first one and at least the forest fight scene in the second one was good but TF 3 was the final straw for me as far as paying to see any more Michael Bay movies regardless of what he does. as for the Ang Lee Hulk, zzzzzz . . . . zzzzzzz . . .zzzzz.

    4. Hey now, Ang Lee's Hulk is awesome for what it is! What it is- is not good... but it transcends good- it's that wonderful, wonderful train-wreck that you can't take your eyes off of! I love/hate that movie sooo much.

Saw the TMNT trailer when it dropped, son! I'm a huge fan; of the old cartoon, comics, movies, newer cartoon, newest Nick-Turtles show... and now this. I think the movie looks...... MUCH better than I thought it would. I love the weight they have to them, and how big their shells are. Really don't like the big human lips on them, though. Why does Bay put lips on everything?!? -First Optimus Prime and now this! But I'll see it, I'm excited. -Can't ruin them any more than The Next Mutation did. Or their music cassettes I used to own! Ha!

  3. It's awesome that Bill got that award and hopefully it brings some recognition to him. You would think the GotG movie would but I have not heard a thing from Marvel about him.

I checked out the ROM remix link and decided after looking through it that I have zero interest in the project. Oh well.I also saw the TMNT trailer as a huge fan and I really dont like the aesthetics of the turltes. They tried to put way too many human features into them.

    1. well look who showed up to say hi. well I seem to be surrounded by TMNT fans although the trailer was apparently not to everyone's liking. but just the same I hope you all enjoy your selves when you get around to seeing it. however it seems we're all on the same page when it comes to the remix project.
