Rom Liefeld . . er I meant to say Rom drawn by Rob Liefeld

Left click to enlarge
A big thanks to The King if Thessaly for giving me a heads up on this art work that turned up a day ago on Rob Liefeld's Instagram account. What a great find this is exactly the sort of thing this blog was made for. This would seem to confirm some speculation about Rob Liefeld being something of a ROM fan.

These images were picked up from a posting on Rob Liefeld Rom homage covers posted by Ptor from the Santcum Sanctorum last year March 13. So although the fan/sketch art at the top of the posting may be the first ever art for Rom by Liefeld it would seem he's had Rom on his mind for a while now.

Also, some new Rom originals just turned up on ebay recently. They're not bad for the most part but the Randy Green piece is my favorite: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-ART-AVENGERS-SKETCH-COVER-variant-ROM-SPACEKNIGHT-BY-randy-green-/330961849487?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d0edd0c8f

  1. Yeah- I saw that on Twitter and thought of you instantly... it's just from this Con-weekend (and I was JUST talking about Liefeld a couple videos ago, too...)
-SO MUCH awesome news outta San Diego this year! I think I'm most excited about the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Days of Future Past stuff... but Superman Vs. Batman? -Avengers 2 w/ that lovable scamp Ultron... It's a good time to be a nerd!
Oh, right- Godzilla! ...and speaking of Liefeld; X-Force movie! ...also, seriously- I hate Gambit but that sketch makes him pretty bad-ass looking. Those cover-comparisons are something else... Good stuff- it all fits together now.

    1. oh man i'm pretty sure you're the first person i've ever heard say that they hated Gambit.

  2. Liefeld did an okay job on Rom, although the feet are all wrong. We can probably check the details gotten wrong up to lack of reference when he was drawing it.

BTW, you might want to find a way to follow @RomSpaceknight on Twitter, as he retweeted this drawing earlier this morning. Sorry, but I haven't had a convenient way to send them to you. Oh, wait, there's a share button in the Twitter app on my phone. Guess I better start using it.

  3. Just so it's easier for people to find my original expose' of Rob Leifeld ROM Swipes, here's the direct link to the post:

    ROM Swiped-Knight

    ;-)

However, that out of the way, I kinda have to admit that his new sketch isn't the worst drawing of ROM I've ever seen.
And hey, he MAY have drawn the feet wrong, but at least he DREW some FEET!

That's some artistic growth right there!

    1. EXACTLY! He has feet, they're regular sized- and no belts, straps, pouches, or ear-piece/antennas for no reason! I call it a win.

    2. ah the feet issue and Liefeld i remember you talking about that on one of your Liefeld videos. well i'll tell you what i think Liefeld did a fairly good job here but pretty much anything looks good next to Dikto's version of Rom. you said it best with your commentary from his work on Speed Ball.

  4. I'm not hating his ROM for the most part. It's a lot better than latest butchery of the DC characters he worked on that's for sure.

  5. I will go out on a huge muscley striated limb and say that might be the finest artwork Liefeld has ever done. :)
Okay, all kidding aside, it's pretty cool. And I detest Liefeld. So there you go. Thanks KoT.

  6. i'm having fun reading all your comments which are beating up on Liefeld. if you do a Google search for Rob Liefeld and hit the image tab there's a lot of funny stuff that turns about other people who are not especially fond of his style. at least his Gambit here looks really good.

    1. All except for the face, which looks strangely like the man himself. That's just...not right.

  7. I respect what Liefeld has done for himself in this industry. And I have embraced a lot of his characters, however his style is so Liefeld that it can only mesh with certain characters. Hawk and Dove goes perfectly with his pencil. Deathstroke was a tragedy.

Here the Gambit looks Ok but he missed a step on ROM. The chest is good I don't like the legs at all. It doesn't look robotic enough. Liefeld gave us Cable and Chapel so he's a damn Rockstar in my book. I just don't like all his music.

  9. I had recently found THESE two HILARIOUS dissertations of some of the WORST of ROB LIEFELD's work.

    Check 'em out:

    40 WORST ROB LIEFELD DRAWINGS

    And their follow up:

The 2nd 40 WORST ROB LIEFELD DRAWINGS

And they didn't even go with the OBVIOUS ones... like "THAT" Captain America pose where he has giant man-boobs.

However, a word of caution... the reviewer uses the "F" word. A LOT. So... maybe don't read it at work, church or in front of small children.

    1. That was the single greatest thing I have seen since the Red Letter Media dissecting of the Star Wars prequels. Thank you so much, P. I laughed, I cried. I fist pumped the air. I felt vindication in my soul.

    3. Funny thing, I was reading that and showed it to a non comic book reader and even she said "and this guy gets paid to do this?" Then I told her he's been paid to do it for a long time. She started laughing, and pointed out that my ten year old had a better understanding of anatomy. I can't really argue that.

    4. `P`.... thankx funny all the way around. Rob put out a lot of characters that were clear hack jobs. The article called him creatively bankrupt. This is true. I feel like DC has earned a piece of this criticism as well for some of the shit they do.

I want to quote a passage or two because they were so funny. But it just wouldn't have the same effect.

    1. Kot, I know that's your boy and all, but you know he has some artistic issues.

    2. If you would have told teenage-me that one day someone would call me Rob Liefeld's "boy" and I would be okay with it- I would have shot myself in the face-hole.
That being said- what artist doesn't have "artistic issues"??? No one artist is perfect, and I've seen panels by some of my favorites ever that I still thought sucked. So why does Rob get the hate? Because it's internet-trendy.
