I can't think of a good posting title for today

I neglected to mention that the fan art I posted last week as well as what you see above was passed along to me from Gary Martin Jr. so you can all thank him for that. Tell me this cool sketch piece here doesn't remind you of Bill Sienkiewicz's style. Or maybe Berni Wrightson from the early Swamp Thing days? It's by a fellow by the name of Shamus Murphy and after a closer look I think it's an interpretation of the first page of issue 1 in which Rom emerges from the impact point of his arrival.
I suspect this one may have been around for a while now but just largely unknown. This one here has been around in variant versions in black n' white which I've posted here before but it just recently turned up as a color painting it's quite excellent from in terms of use of color and figure composition . . .

Did you know that the Starhawk character was co-created by Sal Buscema? Which gives me reason to believe he may have had a lot to do with the character's design which I've always thought was one of the coolest in Marvel since seeing him in a copy of  issue 10 (vol.1) of The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe I had back in the day. His entry was penciled by Al Milgrom who also did the cover art for numerous issues of the Rom series.
In spite of all that I've always found Starhawk's origins a bit convoluted apparently like Firestorm he's actually two people. Also, I've never been a big fan of The Guardians of The Galaxy both in regards to the original and the current group (so sue me). Still though, cool character design and great rendering by Milgrom.

P.S. I just started another brutal work schedule like I had last month. It's gonna last the rest of this week and possibly for most of February so I may not have much time for this internet stuff for a little while.

  1. Sketchy red ink on college-ruled notebook paper- THAT'S how you do it!!! Damn that's awesome looking.
Already told you how much I liked that other one... ROM is so shiny! Very well-put-together piece.
Yup, Steve Gerber and Sal Buscema... Starhawk is the light and the giver of light. Quasar and Her's kid, right there...
It's more like he, and his adopted sister- took turns occupying the same physical space- while the other was in a "limbo". -More like Rick Jones/Genis-Vell than Firestorm- who was two people fusing into one.
But Starhawk was separated from Aleta a few times as well... I love the old Guardians of The Galaxy title. (Big shock, right?) and I will sue you!!!

Damn, dude- good luck with work, see ya when that schedule is done!

    1. And a good title would be: "REDROM! REDROM!!!"
      You know- The Shining style!

  2. That red biro jobbie is amazing! That really shows a ROM not to be messed with - it's like the gun has already been fired and everything is still red as a result...

That's the thing about genius guys like Sal, they created so many sweet characters it's hard to keep track or pick a favourite. Starhawk reminds my of the 90's when even the comic shop owner looked at you as if to say 'You know for the GoTG you could get an X-Men book instead?' I think if I had to pick my top Sal creation it would be either Warpath from the Hellions or Mephisto. But heck even the UFoes those bad knock offs of the FF he made so well that they are living on way past what knock offs usually do.

Have a good time at work mr. Catch you when you are back!

    1. i always loved the his brother 's character Thunderbird. back when i was in my early teens i could really relate to all the angst he felt about everything including his fellow X-Men.

hey let me know if any of you guys out there see Robocop. i was gonna go to an early bird matinee tomorrow but now that plan is fucked. i don't have high hopes for the movie but i'm still hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

  5. ya know i suspect using red was an arbitrary choice and i would also venture a guess this started off as something of a doodle that turned into a pretty cool sketch. i mean if your intention is to do a kick ass piece of fan art you probably aren't going to want to sue lined paper like that. i hope to come up with some new fan art of my own again when i can get some breathing space.

    1. Yeah, that sketch is so bad-ass: I'ma take my copy of the Annual #2 with me out-of-state this weekend and do me a sketch of ROM to warm up for later this month, since it has been so long since I've drawn anything. -I really like that damn sketch.

    2. that's fine but don't draw anything from obvious reference clip art that's cheating too plus in general i fucken hate that. alright i'm off to job #2 and by the way check your email already i sent you something that's fit for a king.

    3. It's not cheating at all to reference from your betters. It's how one gains skills. -Style is just the residue of trying to get it right.

    4. no references other then getting the details of the character right. but aside from that anything less then free hand fan art is cheating. I'm warning you if I see anything like this I'm going to shit all over it http://www.deviantart.com/art/Torpedo-162721347

    5. You need to listen to that Kevin Smith/Neal Adams podcast. Hate to say it, but you are way in the wrong here, boyo! That kind of close-minded thinking leads to little or no improvement ever. And that kind of stigma placed on it is why amateur artists never get any better. And there are a lot more than Neal who admit to that fact.

    6. we're not talking about what works for you in order to practice your drawing skills. i'm talking about what i like to see when it comes to fan art and if i see something that i realize instantly exactly what cover or panel is from i'm going to shit on it. i want to see some imagination, originality and in general something that feels new. i'm not going to get that from what amounts to a glorified tracing job. i don't give a rat's ass what Smith or Adams say about it i know what kind of fan art i enjoy and that's free hand and original. i hate copy cat fan art as much as i hate ditko's work in the 80s and 90s and i'll trash it just the same, fair warning.

  6. Sweet sketch by Mr. Gary Martin Jr. Early Sienkiewicz? Sure why not. Awesome sketch regardless. Love the face, eyes and pose the most. Didn't know Sal created Starhawk's look. Wow. Damn fine job. So did he have a hand in the other GoTG's looks as well or just Starhawk?

  7. Ah, sorry about that. I stand corrected. Still a brilliant sketch nonetheless:)

  8. I have to say that I actually have grown to like Starlord since seeing him in Prologue. I will say I haven't really liked things since the reboot.
