New Our Pal Sal Tribute video

When I first found this video I was pleased to see that it included some Rom clip art among the collection of Sal's awesome work. And after chatting with this guy who made the video in the comments section I was also pleased to find that he also thought dikto was a bad choice to replace Sal on ROM spaceknight. Now this video is a fairly recent upload and I couldn't help but think as cool as it is (especially with the porno music soundtrack) how even cooler it would have been to have also included some of the more recent stuff from Sal like the Rom vs Mars Attacks bonus pin up page from IDW and the Sal at his drafting table with numerous Marvel superheros present commission art that turned up earlier this year and was later digitally colored by a big time Sal fan from Portugal.

  1. Not to knock the current artists, who I respect and love, but sometimes when you look at old works from Sal and his contemporaries it hits you right in the stomach how much comic book art has changed. Not necessarily badly, but... different. And you want to dig out all your old comics and slip back into the old paneling and dynamic format. Makes it difficult to read some of the modern books.

    1. i find it near impossible to read any of the new stuff unless i happen to find it in a discount box. glad you liked the art work in the previous posting those were a good find and although i'm some what under whelmed with the new Hasbro product you make some good points from a marketing stand point.

    2. There are exceptions to the rule in comics today, most of which can be found outside the big two. Truly original stories where the format and artwork lend themselves to the writing, and vice versa. These are the real visionaries and artists in comics today.
As to the marketing, I get to see the other side of it, from kids who have no real reference to the old stuff, and have grown up with the cutification of the heros. They love it. And mostly I just grin and nod, because I realize that at one point, I loved Popples and Care Bears, but I grew up and moved on. :)

    5. Good point. I blame the switch to digital art. That medium loses something in translation... Sure, just like regular artists- some are better than others... but, I dunno... I guess I'm just old-school.

    6. i swung by this comic shop/toy store yesterday while i was in san francisco that has these 3 for $1 boxes i like to go through whenever i'm in the neighborhood. i also thumbed through the New Suicide Squad #1 issue as well as some Amanda Waller One Shot that i think has been out a while now. they just didn't do anything for me. although from what random stuff from Infinity i've read (those before mentioned discount boxes) i probably would have been into it had they just not destroyed Galador even if Galador and the spaceknights had not played a major role in the whole thing. throw in those high cover prices and new comics today just aren't for me.

    8. Saga hasn't let me down yet. But if you want something from Marvel I really like Fraction's work on Hawkeye. It's very different. Not the best art, but the writing is outstanding.

...I do a lot of drugs.

    2. well the drugs would certainly explain you finding any redeeming qualities in dikto's goofy looking art in the ROM spaceknight series. speaking for myself when it comes to drugs and or dikto's work in the late 70s, 80s and 90s I just say no.

    3. All the cool kids like drugs and Ditko...

    4. This is better than crossfire. I need popcorn. For the record, art wise, I agree with Shlomo. But then I was never concerned with being cool.
