I recently discovered what appears to be a digital mock up on comicartfans.com and it seemed like a nice posting to open up 2015. Hopefully you're having a "Fabulous 1st" day of 2015. The back story behind it is that apparently the Marvel Master Piece bonus Pin up page in the back of ROM spaceknight #3 by Al Milgrom was originally done as the cover art for issue #1. I can't confirm that at this time but never the less that pin up page sure makes for a great cover.

Jan. 5th Update: A big thanks to johnmiic for sending me this farcebook screen shot of this unofficial Marvel team up with the 80s god of muscle rock THOR and ROM. Now that's what I call heavy metal, most likely with the assistance of photoshop. You can check out Thor here http://www.thorcentral.com/
That's an interesting tidbit I never heard before. And a kick ass alternate cover.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the Crystar/Moltar envelope. Beyond all words, because, as I'm sure you remember, I OWN ALL ISSUES. bwahahaha. Thank you again. I'm going to hang that on my wall in a place of honor.
Happy New Year to you and everyone here, may 2015 bring you all blessings out the whazoo. But in a less painful way than that sounds.
little known interesting tidbits and awesome fan art is what this blog is all about babe.
DeleteIt had me digging out my long boxes to find that issue. :)
DeleteI'm pretty sure I've heard that the pin-up was a stab at the cover for #1 as well, but I forget the source. Possibly Jim Shooter's blog?
DeleteShooter on his blog:

"Getting the first cover done was a nightmare. The concept was simple—an apparently menacing robot terrifying the people of a small town—but, it took four tries, I think, to get an acceptable penciled cover. I don’t remember who did the first couple of tries…Sal Buscema…? Al Milgrom…? Not sure. But they weren’t impactful enough."
Michael Aushenker's ROM article in Twomorrow's Back Issue magazine #32 (Feb2009):
http://issuu.com/twomorrows/docs/back_issue__32/7?e=2241656/5113939
"Al Milgrom's original cover to ROM #1. Compare it to the Frank Miller/Josef Rubinstein version used instead... "Frank was the hot artist at the time," says Milgrom. "I actually thought my version was better. I would rarely have said it because Miller was the star, and who was I? But I think it worked better."
Awesome Crystar illustration envelope my friend, what a great idea! ;)
ReplyDeletewelcome Jafari Stew thanks for swinging by. i've got more Crystar fan art on this blog which you can find using the word search feature in the top left corner,
DeleteThor and ROM in one space is almost too much celestial awesomeness for me to handle.
ReplyDeleteOk, but, but... Wow! I'm intrigued and am going to read up more on Thor. Never heard of him before, but on a cursory pass tonight I see that he has a son named Ikon, and he posted the photo with this ROM costume (sure looks real to me) while touting a bio-pic documentary movie coming out soon, maybe it'll appear!
ReplyDeletetrust me, that's photoshop : )
DeleteOk, but, but... I'm totally buying the fantasy. It's not exactly my style of music but I've enjoyed many documentaries like his so I'll watch it even without the Real Heavy Metal (so close!!) cameo. I don't think I have anything similar to that ROM in my vault of art curated from all over, so is it a new CGI creation you think?
Deletethere's a series of things going on here that lead me to suspect this being some sort of photoshop gig. first of all that photo is from the 80s which i can tell after having watched some of their concert videos on youtube yesterday. if someone had made a very sophisticated ROM costume back then surely it would have turned up again some where else where we would have seen it again all these years? also, the lead singer of THOR is a pretty big guy so who ever was wearing that "costume" would have to be a huge fella. now you have to think about the human body and how it fits together in terms of your body parts and how it would fit in the said costume. it doesn't quite work especially where the head, neck and shoulders are concerned. as someone who draws a lot i pay close attention to those details as i did with my latest piece of fan art just this past weekend http://csuhsux.deviantart.com/art/Batman-vs-Black-Spider-Assault-on-Arkham-505090411
DeleteThe Rom in the photo looks more like a statue than a costume that can actually move, don't you think?
DeleteNice crystar art .always cool to see crystar stuff .I was certainly a crystar fan way back. Cool black and white digital version of the issue 3 pin up. I always liked that one just a glance over from the Archie gone full Firefall. The ROM with Thor looks like a custom action figure (cool photo though)
ReplyDeletesit tight Joe, i'm gonna post some stuff in about an hour from now i think you're gonna really like. . . .
