Marvel Fanfare #4 |
I can't even begin to count how many times I came across this house ad over the years during and even after the 80s. And all that time I had no idea it had a cool Rom easter egg in it.
Comments, information & especially ROM related original art work all welcomed

ReplyDeleteThought you might be interested by the above link. It's definitely ROM-related. Enjoy;)
thanks man, but it just seems to be the same old shit with that issue.
DeleteWell, obviously there's a ROM issue on the wall in that second panel. And that's an issue of Marvel Fanfare in the first panel. I'm imagining ROM on the cover. And I'm getting old, and can't see the last one, even when I magnify it.
ReplyDeleteoh Random you only found 1 out of 3 : ( but you're the only one to venture a guess so far so i still love you : )
DeleteAwww. Thank you. I love you too you big JewBear.
DeleteI'm going to come back here this weekend and give you a write-up reply on these easter egg items. Until then I return to the prison-of-my-own-making in the real world (income tax hell)... P.S. loved the pun :-)
ReplyDeleteAs for these fun ROM eggs, the first two are Al Milgrom drawing tiny comic covers in the backgrounds and including ROMs. Fanfare #3's panel only used the first two letters "RO", but besides the fact there were no other Marvel "R" titles then, check out the square white head with tiny 'shine' lines next to it representing glowing eyes or glossy plandanium.
ReplyDeleteI think we can officially call it a trend; during the time the ROM series was being printed, whenever an artist at Marvel had a chance to draw covers of comics within their art, it seems they would very often choose to title them "ROM"! Surely they loved the character as much as we do...or, it was just three short letters to scribble.
The cartoon ad above is the grand-daddy: ROM #s 5, 6, & 7, and all Marvel comics cover-dated Apr, May, & Jun 1980 (except "Fun & Games"), have this half-page cartoon with a little form for subscriber complaints or address changes. All us Zombies remember the goofy Ron Zalme drawing but had probably forgotten, if we ever noticed, the tiny titles on comics pictured there; not to mention most copies of this ad suffered shoddy printing. Find one that's survived and see two ROMs!
Got your best copy of the ad out? First, ignore the caption that says the man in the suit took all the Marvels from the newsstand. Second, look at the all-green area, just below and to the right of the small "KANDY" sign, for the most legible "ROM" title. Then, if you've got a really nice copy of the ad, you'll be able to read across the books hanging above whirly-cap guy: "HULK", "GHOST RIDER", and "ROM" (notice the figure drawn on it matches the ROM below).
Happy Easter all!!
Don't eat too much candy. Note to self, mainly. ;-)
{Addendum: one other exception that did not carry the Zalme cartoon ad is "Spidey Super Stories".}
