Dust in the wind

Actually the posting title probably should have been Stardust in the solar wind. There actually is something as solarwind astronomically speaking Google it. But I'm hoping someone out there picks up on what I'm referencing with my posting title as it is. So moving right along, what we have here is the latest custom figure by Chris which I'm sure most of you have seen already but here it is just in case for you followers who aren't on farce book or deviant art. We first saw Stardust in Rom annual 1 but he again made a brief appearance in the Quasar series.
Although he wasn't able to get it to me in time to include in the Bill Mantlo fan art birthday package I sent off last week you'll be happy to know we made sure this fan art by Zhaanman never the less will be getting to Bill in time. And moving on here we have some more foot notes from Gary Martin Jr. Ya know it seems like there's two different types of foot notes and here are some examples of what I'm talking about.

Doesn't it seem sometimes that foot notes are more about promoting other titles then having to do with a truly relevant tie in? Take this clip art from Captain America #305. We saw Cap. in both Rom #65 and 66 and even though it was mentioned in 65 that heroes from every corner of the globe had come to fight in the final battle of the Wraith War Captain Britain never makes an actual appearance.
On the flip side here's a foot note from THOR 354 with Beta Ray Bill who did appear a couple of times in Rom #65 as well as on the cover http://romspaceknightart.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-marvel-appearance-that-sadly-never.html
That one makes a lot more sense to me, so does this one from The New Defenders.

Oh boy Gary Martin Jr. "a Rom curator" just saw my posting and called me out on my latest misinformation fuck up. Indeed Captain Brittan did appear in Rom #65 and on the very same page as did the Defenders no less. But there he was sporting his red costume as we knew him in the 80s. More foot notes on the way.

  1. Hey Shlomo!
Thanks for featuring my newest custom! I look forward to hearing what the blog brothers think of it! Also, I've really been enjoying all of the ROM reference clips you've found! Some of them bring back memories and some I never even knew about!
The Zahnmann art piece is fantastic. I love his art style. What a great gift for the Mantlo!
As you can imagine I'm working on a few more ROM related customs. This next one is gonna be tough,...
Well bro's, enjoy the blog and the figure, and please let me know what you think! Thanks again!

    1. well that's the thing about this blog i specifically try to feature mostly stuff that's new or has been around for a while that is largely unknown. on farce book there's a "Bring Back ROM: Spaceknight" page. it's a good example of the same ol same ol. there's hardly anything there that any long time Rom fan hasn't heard or seen a million times already.

  2. Ugh and Double Ugh!

Ugh, that now you have me interested in hunting down every footnote referring to ROM to add to my collection of every ROM, appearance of ROM and appearance of Dire Wraiths.

and double ugh, because while I have fond memories of ROM and have read and re-read my collection many times, that included panel from #65 reminds me of how bad the art was in those slap-dash concluding Wraith-War issues. :(

    1. well my friend, you will probably have a love/hate relationship with the next 3 or so postings because they will all have more Rom related footnotes. and yes i agree art wise the dikto era for the Rom series was indeed a grim one. 65 could have been so much more awesome if just about anybody else had done the art work. bashing on jonathan hickman and steve dikto is always welcomed here.

    2. It's too bad really, b/c Ditko in his Spidey days is one of my all-time faves. . .

Oh, and I forgot to give praise on the Stardust figure! I love an obscure character. . . Rom Annual #1 was actually the second issue of Rom I ever owned (after #21)

    3. yeah well that's the things if you're looking at an old Spidey or Dr. Strange issue dikto's stuff looks fun cause that was the standard back then. but after years of Buscema on Rom and seeing the work of artists like Michael Golden, John Byrne, Mike Zeck and Allan Davis every where else dikto's stuff looks more like something that belongs to the Archie comic series.

    4. @themiddlespaces,
Thank you so much for the custom praise! I'm really glad you like the figure! I'm trying to work on a few of ROM's enemies now, and Stardust had to be in there! Thank you for coming back to comment on the figure! I really appreciate the opinions of fellow ROM fans, or blog bros as I call them!

  4. An unusual choice for a custom! I dig it though.
@exhuman- Who did you use as the base?
Cloak really looks awesome there- works great filling up the background...
Hahaha! -Look how shitty The Beast looks!!! Oh, man...

    1. Thanks for the comment man! I'm glad you dig it! I used a Marvel Legends Constrictor for the body and a HEAVILY modified power-man head for the noggin. The bonds are just plastic fodder parts and a little sculpt. The painting was insane but a lot of fun. Thanks again!

  7. zhannman, the important thing is that it gets to Bill so it's all good brother.
thanks for the assist today Gary! you must have an analyzer like Rom but yours detects informational screw ups instead of Dire Wraiths.

  8. Another excellent custom. I was blown away. And this is what I love about customs, you can make figures of characters you never see anywhere else. Thank you for choosing Stardust, and putting his starstuff bonds back in place. I'm sure he's much more comfortable with them on.

    1. oh that's right at the end of the issue Rom took all of his starstuff mojo and used to to save those kids. gotta love the big silver guy : )

    3. That's the rumor, and it's funny you said this, and that it was posted now. I just watched the episode of Babylon 5 where Delenn quotes that starstuff line.
@Shlomo, of course we do! He's noble, brave, and shiny. Of course, the first two matter more, but the gleam is very comforting.

  10. Great stardust Chris. I instanly knew who he was on the first look.your keeping the bar set high as with all your customs with him.

Stardust was a creepy bad guy thats for sure. I always wondered who those unseen forces were who took his body as the start of the annual shows him begging them.did quasar answer that one or did it remain a mystery?

    1. Joseph,
Thanks for the custom kudos! I love getting feedback from blog brothers! Yeah Stardust was SUPER creepy and weird but also an incredibly awesome character! I thought he definitely deserved his own figure.
As far as your question regarding the unseen forces,..I would ask the Shlomo! I'll bet he knows, he knows everything,...hes watching us right now...
