Foot notes from S.H.I.E.L.D

Continuing with Gary's foot notes and the S.H.I.E.L.D. theme from of the last posting. You all remember this charming little scene from Rom #43? Back in the day I felt like I could just stare at this page for hours. Yeah S.H.I.E.L.D almost lost their helicarrier that the Dire Wraiths had had it with all the panzy ass infiltration games they'd been playing with S.H.I.E.L.D since the beginning of the Rom series.

And it seemed like the Wraith War had taken it's toll on S.H.I.E.L.D in more was then one as mentioned in the Incredible Hulk 298 clip art above as well as in the Incredible Hulk 297 clip art below. By the way I dunno if the agent shooting the Hell Hound in the mouth is supposed to be Gabriel Jones or just the token black S.H.I.E.L.D agent on that page but either way he should have had a dialogue bubble saying "EAT THIS!" (that's from ALIENS).

  1. Good Ol' Gabe Jones. He even had a relationship with Peggy Carter back in the day.
    Nice splashes by Sal Buscema.

    2. I know, buddy. I'll think about doing some sort of homage for the blog. Maybe some Micronauts delight.

  3. For Gabe Jones Intrahistory, I recommend reading Steve Englehart's The Secret Empire saga. One of the best Marvel runs ever.

  4. Man it is so great to see that page! I remember it well! The little details in there make it so much fun to look at. I especially love the agents being thrown off the upper levels! One of the best pieces of ROM art ever.

  5. Gabe was a huge part of my comics fandom as a youth because he appeared in time to help Kate Waynesboro (Banner's best love interest) try and contain the Hulk without killing him. I grew to know the Hulk at the time Bruce had just gained control over the monster and watched his descent into savagery with great unease, worry and fascination. Gabe and Kate flying around trying to find the Hulk and save him from his own demons was one of the most pivotal images of my childhood. Gabe came to represent SHIELD in my budding comics consciousness and I was so worried when the Hulk swatted him in issue 299.

    1. amazing. i've read about a dozen Hulk issues from the early 80s and i hardly have a vague recollection of this character. i do remember Kate from at least a couple of issues i've read including 296 which guest starred ROM.

  6. Egh- damn S.H.I.E.L.D.... That show is still only mediocre, at best. I'm enjoying colorless Arrow more! That's a little sad- it's been more comic-booky than a Marvel show.
I was reading my Spider-Man's Tangled Web run last night and thinking- why can't they make a Marvel show like THIS. An anthology set in the universe but where the main characters are ancillary in the story, only making cameo appearances...
Still- I guess there is hope? -That line of separate Defenders shows that will be exclusive to Nexflix and build a larger universe they recently announced... sounds promising. Let's just hope this time that DareDevil's on TV he's not just in his pajamas and wearing a sleeping-mask!

ANYWAYS! -That Hellicarrier design is HILARIOUSLY awesome!!!

    1. when Arrow first started I checked it out but it didn't do much for me and I never went back to it. I have to admit this week's episode of S.H.I.E.L.D was pretty uninteresting despite the Avengers movie tie -in. and yeah that was a pretty atrocious Daredevil. tomorrow's posting will be awesome, and not in an hilarious way.

  7. Colorless Arrow season 2, so far, has been a game changer. They are stepping up the comic-book-ness and DC Universe aspects of it- since they are gonna back-door pilot a Flash series off from it and (rumor has it) that the Flash from that show will be The Flash in the Justice League movie. And they are already tying in Ra's Al Ghul and the League of Assassins in Arrow.
