New kick ass custom figure and some cool fan art

I really enjoy doing these side by side cover comparisons of these X-Men back issues with the corresponding X-Men Classic reprints. On this one I'm so torn because I love the original but the cover variant looks pretty damn good too especially with how they included Forge's neutralizer which was a pivotal part of the issue. An issue I'm happy to remind you all which launched a four issue story arc (X-Men 186, 187, 188, 189) of the attempted assassination of Forge by the Dire Wraiths only narrowly avoided by some help from The X-Men. But as it turned out Forge had almost as much to worry about from Storm despite her having lost her mutant powers. Here's a back posting of the side by side comparisons of the next two X-men issues  http://romspaceknightart.blogspot.com/search?q=classic+x-men

2.5"x3.5" Watercolor over inks sketch card by Danny Kuang

Now as we all know sometime not too long before the Wraith War spilled into the pages of the X-Men the Dire Wraiths had something of a "changing of the guard". In other words the females killed off all the males so they could do things they're way proving that indeed the female is the more deadly of most any species  : )

But that certainly doesn't make this new custom male Dire Wraith from Chris any less cool. In fact it's not just merely cool it's down right bad ass. And to save you the trouble of asking the base figure was The Thing from the Fantastic 4.

It's funny when artists who are Rom fans seem to almost be thinking about the same thing at nearly the same time. It wasn't long ago I did a piece that included Rom and Acroyear and even more recently Firefall. Have a look what just turned up yesterday http://dannphillips.deviantart.com/gallery/

Sunday Update: I think Firefall must be the spaceknight of the month or something look at this video that just turned up today http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvXLbM6Womc

  1. I do like that card art very much. Love the reflection of the ray on him most.

Ahh those xmen issues i too prefered the orginal covers. Even red one with storm and forge. I liked the xmen tie ins here more so then the avengers. Though the avengers when the guy just walked on in the females have some unique killing fun with the males that was great!!

Speaking of males chris has done it yet again with an awesome custom. Man this next to his hell hound would be something ferice great job chris.

for what turned up yesterday again he comes correct with the rom fan art. I love that he has been doing so much.the team up one is very sweet.better then that tri team up he did a bit back i love roms jets here and i love the way he did the planets.very cool.the other has a unique posture of rom but it works.just look how good those feet are.and firefall is awesome outstanding with this living fire. Always impressed by all his works as well as yours and this blogs postings.

    1. Joseph!
Thank you so much for the kind words man! I'm really glad that you like the custom! Heres a little known fun fact about that,..What you see is actually a collaboration between Shlomo and myself! I was originally going to do the Wraith in a white and eggshell skin tone,..then I talked to Shlomo,.and thanks to his guidance and awesome reference stuff,..I went with that sickly yellow skin tone, and only dry-brushed the white for highlights. Damn good advice! I really wanted him to look like the reference material I was working from. But the background colors and some of the shading you see was done digitally by the Shlomo! I personally love it! Thanks again for the comment man!

  2. OH MY GOODNESS That custom is AMAZING!!!! Great job. I have a question for the people who post here. Is that the Sci-Wraiths true form or do they really look like the female wraiths? I think I read they prefer the form of the custom figure shown above because they are ashamed of their true appearance. Is that true? It seems like all the artists now draw the wraiths like the females.

    1. I got this. in Rom # 47 we see the female Dire Wraiths for the first time. in Rom # 48 we get the back story of the history of the dire wraith sexes the rivalry between them especially in regards to the preference that males have toward sciences as a opposed to the females to sorcery. but the short answer is that custom and it's corresponding clip art are the dire wraith males in their true form. the ones who suck your brains out are dire wraith females and the ones who suck the money out of your bank account are human females.

  3. so i am thinking the males can't do the whole brain sucking thing?

  4. i thought issue 48 established all wraith's look the same and the males hide their true form because they are ashamed of it.

    1. Thanks. Just read it. I was always just confused by the scene that Joseph talks about below. Still confusing. :)

  7. Yeah you may may be reffering to that pannel were the females take off their robes flaunting how unlike the males (always hidding ) they are proud of their true form.

  8. AWESOME Wraith! wow, totally nailed it yet again Chris! (good call on the yellow with white highlights Shlomo). I wasn't crazy about the art in that x-men run but the story was great. Acroyear vs ROM art was cool. Micronauts and ROM will forever be my favorite Marvel runs.

  10. That watercooler sketch card card is bloody incredible! That's easily one of the best ROM images I've ever seen. The blaster doesn't look laughable as some seem to draw it, and the darker, grungier colours really work to show the war he is fighting.

  11. Yea that was wild such detail behind the look on the card! A bit of a different look on Rom head but not bad and Chris Wow you know How I feel from the Deviant posting but still this Science cast of the Dire Wraith male is nothing short of Brilliant right down to the other poses you posted Wow!!!

  13. I would love to have that wraith in my collection. But, you know, hidden on the shelf, cause it scares me a little. It's so lifelike! Brilliant sense of movement Chris.

The Forge/Wraith storyline were some of the first x-men comics I read. Not only was it a beautiful and sad love story, it tied Marvel's most interesting mutants into the wraith war. It's a perfect example of how the Marvel universe was integrated through its titles, without doing a massive cross over.
