The custom figure that's too hot to handle!

Left click to enlarge
Well this now makes the third Micronauts cover I've strategically inserted Rom's image into and I think this is a good time to post it given that it's Bill Mantlo's birthday. Thanks to Mantlo's imagination these characters would live on for many years after their respective toy lines long since disappeared from store shelves and stock rooms. It just sucks that we never got to see them together but of course we've had that discussion already here on more then one occasion.

Here's a digital project I've had in the back of my mind ever since Chris produced this awesome Firefall custom. Aside from the custom it's self Chris had an assortment of well staged photos of it that almost begged to have something like this done to one of em. You all know about the back story for Archie Stryker and the Firefall spaceknight armor I don't need to get into that right?
Good, so with that said let me move on to presenting the last of Gary's foot notes. This one comes from Nova #10 (Vol. 2). Rom spaceknight #24 sure did have some staying power given all the flash back cameos and foot notes out there for it. The art work is done by Erik Larsen who I'm not a big fan of.

And now my latest back issue discount box finds from earlier this week . . .

Fantastic Four Roast special (1982)
This panel comes from the 1982 Fantastic Four Roast 1 shot spoof. Did anybody else out there know about this Torpedo appearance in it that I discovered?

Avengers Academy 25 (April 2012)
Onward to some other shit I found in the same discount box that wasn't so cool. Coming right off the heels of the massive disappointment that was The Annihilators mini-series we were then treated to a shitty 3 issue (#23, 24 and 25) story arc in Avengers Academy that featured the return of Hybrid. By the time I got done reading 24 I was getting irritated with how they hadn't explained Hybrid's return as they did in X-Man 31 (1997).
By the time issue 25 came out I decided to thumb through it first and woe and behold I came across the clip art you see here. Oh man was I ever pissed! Why couldn't he have just said something like "He left Earth years ago" or "We don't know where he is and we don't have time to try and fins him". Did ya have to say Rom is dead Marvel? really!? I didn't buy that issue nor did I buy any new Marvel comic since then up until recently with Infinity and we all know how that turned out. But I decided to pick up Avengers Academy #25 for a buck just so I could share this bullshit with you all. To all Rom fans, don't buy new marvel comics it's just rewarding bad behavior and Infinity is just the latest example.

  1. Aghh he is dead wtf you mean presumed dead or missing.how did he die asshole because even the spaceknights series didnt say all that.
I actually liked that series for what it was .way better in my mind then annihalitors

That miconauts cover custom is awesome i love it very impressive.im going to have to pick a few issues up soon as i am a micronaut virgin

Cool take on the firefall i dig the empty look of the awesome custom by chris.it brought back warm 2 in 1 feelings of the ghostly armor.i do like what you did but i enjoyed the empty look .

Awesome find with torpeado in that roast.!! What a find .who the hell is the guy who got the D's on his report card?

Wow ROM 24 refferenced as the classic is the best footnote yet. Im sure for nova fans it was a big deal.

    1. That is, the very awesome, 3-D Man!
They used him excellently in Secret Invasion; he could see Skrulls in their true form, even when shape-shifted.

    2. The 3ds now make sense.im going to have to look into him.

  2. SHLOMO!!! You find the greatest stuff! First off I have to say, I am loving what you did with Firefall. That IS the perfect Archie Striker mug! ..and the flames are a really nice touch! Your Torpedo find is great! I even love the banter! That Micronauts cover is like something out of a dream for me! I'm blown away by that one man, what an amazing story that could have been! Thanks for all the hard work you obviously put into this posting man! This is great stuff!

  4. Hahaha! I told him then that the FireFall custom needed an Archie Stryker variant head! Great minds think alike. That is a PERFECT Archie-Stryker-face! PERFECT! Good job!
And ROM looks bad-ass on that cover, son! -Speaking of ass- hello, Marionette!

Ahhh, the good old Fantastic Four Roast. Here is my review/favorite jokes from of/from it: thekingofthessaly.blog.com/2013/05/ffroast/
-Glad you got yourself a copy!
...but why would you buy Avengers Academy books? You were just asking for disappointment, there!!!

Erik Larsen is THE MAN! (I have every issue of The Savage Dragon. Best comic run since Cerebus!) I really liked his 7 issue run on Nova.

    1. thanks K.o.T i'm really happy about how that Archie Stryker digital variant worked out. unfortunately I haven't read any thing in recent years that involved 3-D Man but that's pretty intriguing about his power to see skrulls I don't recall that from his Marvel Premier issues. as for Avengera Academy I don't think I had even heard of that title until someone gave me the heads up on Hybrid. I know Savage Dragon has a loyal fallowing out there but he never caught my interest. if it makes you feel any better as far as Larson goes even though he's not my favorite I think even his style would have been more preferable then steve dikto on Rom.

  5. Great stuff! Firefall looks amazing!! I had no idea about the Fantastic Four roast! Marvel saying Rom is dead....hmmmm....not cool at all. Missing is more accurate. I love Erik Larsen but I don't think that art is done by him. I want to say Chris Marrinan?

    1. yeah you're right that's not Larson i just looked into it but that Marrinan guy's style looks just like Larsen to me.

    2. I had to do a double take on it too. Pretty similar. Plus Larsen wrote Nova.

    3. i have the first two issues of that Nova series and although i noticed Larsen did the covers i didn't realize he was the writer as well. the interior art was done by Joe Bennett who i like much more as an artist but they were a great read so i have to give it up to Larsen for that. thanks for the heads up!

  6. so...killing off Galador and saying Rom is dead is a way to keep Bill's legacy alive?!!!!!!!!!

    1. No just doucebagness to the fullest. Total insult to the greatest most noble spaceknight.maybe this was in refference to univese x or something i dont see it as a nod to the spaceknights series that many did not care for. I like the fact they left it open as the angel elite only assumed the prime director(ROM) was dead

  7. Amazing cover art Shlomo (a total "I WISH" storyline) and Archie's mug on Chris' Firefall complete with living fire is AWESOME! mad skillz my friend :)
I love the footnote in nova. The roast? omg where do I start on the bad puns hehe... RT, yeah, this is was another case of something they really didn't have to do. Shlomo, the Hybrid storyline in ROM (with the X-Men) was probably the most horrifying comic story I have ever read. The genius of Mantlo with Sal Buschema's art was classic horror goodness. I didn't read the Avengers Academy issues but I'm guessing they didn't live up to the original. oh and Happy Birthday Bill! Thanks for the Micronauts, ROM and all of the other awesome stories I still remember from my youth.

  8. Man Shlomo I'm Lovin that Rom Micronaut cover it is Fan-Tastic man I would have loved to see where that story would go! and about the horror of the Hybrid storyline was darkly deep as much so as when the Wraith Witches showed up and started sucking the memories and lives of their victims wow that was devastating!

  9. Nice post mr. The cover you created is awesome!!

I always liked Erik Larsen - especially on Spider-Man, Aquaman and Savage Dragon that stuff is gold. Plus he's always very frank in his interviews about everything and ya gotta love that. Looking at that clip art it looks like that's Nova drawn by Chris Marrinan rather than Larsen - but that just might be my coffee deprived eyes playin tricks again.

I love that roast panel. Torpedo is a cool cameo - but the icing on the cake has ta be Ghost Rider biking through all those tables and everyone just sitting there. No tablecloths going up in flames or anything, oh well they did say a roast!

  11. by the way guys i just wanted to add that the Hybrid return in X-Man 31 (1997) with Nate Grey was quite good. of course it's not quite up there with Hybrid's original appearance along with the X-Men in Rom 17 and 18 but it definitely does the character and the Rom continuity justice. for those of you who have not read the issue i would urge you to read up on it by doing a Google search with key words "X-Man Hybrid". good stuff unlike this Avengers Academy shit.

  12. Very nice Firefall -- I love ol' Archie Stryker and his ever-present angry face! Very interesting how they put a reference to a character who shouldn't technically be dead (ROM, who survived on Galador last I checked) in front of the successor to ANOTHER Bill Mantlo creation, the original White Tiger. Kind of a slap to the face of Mantlo fans, IMHO. Speaking of Bill, check out this interview on CBR of Guggenheim's Punisher where he gives props to The Boisterous One. If you think it's suitable, David, please feel free to share it on the Facebook Mantlo page. http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=46289

  13. good point about White Tiger Rick I didn't even make that connection before even though I certainly knew about Mantlo and George Perez having created the original. i'll give that link a closer look tomorrow when I have more time thanks.

  14. Just because Giant-man thinks Rom is dead doesn't mean he is, in fact, dead. Just that everybody thinks he is. Didn't see a body.
