After I got off work last night I found my self in the mood for going to a comic shop. While going through some $1 bins I came across this Marvel Age issue that was published in December of 1989. A little voice inside my head beckoned me to look through it and I came across part 3 of an ongoing article from the previous issues about Marvel Comics of the 80s decade which also included a few paragraphs about licensed properties . . .
This will probably be my last posting for the month but be back here
Feb.1st because I've got some great stuff lined up for all you Rom fans and fans in general of Bill Mantlo other creations during his amazing career. In the mean time I'll leave you with this new Dire Wraith sighting. Hat tip to Ptor from the Sanctum blog for the heads up on this. A preview available here:

Nice. I still remember looking to do a subscription to ROM and wondering why it wasn't on the list only to find out a few issues later that the series was about to end. Still disappointing. Ol' Toaster Head was really a great character and a great series.
ReplyDeletehey man good to hear from you again! well at least here on this blog Rom fans can still get a little bit of a weekly fix. every time i think i've run out of stuff to post about something else falls into my lap one way or another.
DeleteIt is amazing how that seems to happen isn't it Ha! Too cool how things just fall into place.
ReplyDeleteindeed it is my friend. i'll be visiting a comic shop tomorrow in my area that's only been around since 2011. that'll be my first time there so who knows?
DeleteWhat you’ve got there is "The Marvel Age of Comics", a looong-running feature article of Marvel Age Magazine; a year-by-year text recap (adorned with occasional artwork, comic covers, & Official Overstreet prices) of the entire history of the universe's characters, starting at 1961 in Marvel Age #13 and ending with 1985 in MA #110. Each issue of the magazine concentrates on a few titles at a time, so you were actually very lucky to target the 1980 chapter that featured ROM. You've got amazing "Spaceknight sense" (as if we didn't know)! In case you'd want to collect the rest of ROM's synopses, I can list them for you since I curated every Marvel Age last year when I found him on the back cover calendar.
ReplyDeleteMA #77 - 1979 Part II – describes series launch; ROM #1 was the most expensive back issue listed there, beating Micronauts #1 & early Star Wars from the same period
MA #83 - 1980 Part III – you've shown it all
MA #90 - 1981 Part Five - X-Men's stint in #17-18 post the highest values
MA #95 – 1982 Part Five - artwork from the cover of ROM #37 sans original logo
MA #99 - 1983 Part Four
(MA #100 – 1983 Part Five - name only appears as one of Marvel Two-In-One's guest-stars)
(MA #101 - 1984 Part One – name only with Dire Wraiths mentions in recaps of Avengers & X-Men)
MA #104 - 1984 Part Four
MA #109 – 1985 Part IV - end of Wraith War, prices for ROM #62-73 & Annual #4
{no recap for the final two ROM issues.}
fantastic! thank you for taking the time to compile that list Gary. it sounds like i already have posted here the best of the bunch with the possible exception of # 77. send it over when you have some free time in the near future if you could.
DeleteGreat stuff as always, Ben. Take care and we'll hear from you soon.
ReplyDeleteAnd here I was thinking I didn't have any reason to keep those later issues of Marvel Age any more. (Don't worry, guys, I would have checked to make sure first.) I'd forgotten that the "Marvel Age of Comics" feature finally made it up to the '80s.
